Red Sox 8, Tampa Bay 7:
Another Sweep, and Some History Making…

Posted by Christine E. at 9:01 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

So I thought the win streak was toast yesterday when they were down by 5 at the start of the 8th inning. But then they had one of those 6-Run innings, which was enough to get them the win and sweep against the Oh-so-awful Tampa Bay Rays…

But the dark spot of yesterday’s contest was Xander Bogaerts cracking a bone in his ankle in the 7th inning when he slid in the 3rd base dugout, trying to stop a bad throw. So he is now on the DL for 10-14 days while the bone heals..Good thing the Sox didn’t trade Brock Holt, who will probably be seeing some time at SS, along with minor leaguer Tzu-Wei Lin, who takes Xander’s spot on the 25-man…

We saw Eduardo Rodriguez forgo another minor league rehab start and an pitch a fairly strange start: He threw 92 pitches, but could not get out of the 4th inning (3 2/3), and gave up 3 runs on 5 hits (including 2-run homer), and walked 2..But then he struck out 7…definitely a weird on–because if it has been a-6 inning start, it would have been considered a good outing…He probably should have made at least one more start with Pawtucket…

But I think we can rest a bit easier about the hitting, as the Sox out hit Tampa Bay this weekend 21 to 12. However, the player who was leading the team in BA (.368), home runs (2) and RBI’s (9) is now on the DL for 10-14 days…

So with an .889 (Holy Buckets!) win percentage, they have not only have an 8 game winning streak, and the best record in baseball, they are off to the best start a Red Sox team has ever had…

    EVER…

And as an added bonus, they get to move onto the Skanks for 3 starting tomorrow…

Since the Sox are meeting the Skanks for the first time this year, thought it was waaaay overdue to do the “How many games can they pick up in the AL East” exercise? To Sum up. The Sox are 8-1 (Nope, never gets old…) and the Skanks are in third place (Ha Ha Ha…ahem…) at 5-5 and 3.5 games behind the Sox…So…

    To the Blackboard!

If the Sox Sweep: They will be 11-1(!!!) on the season, and will be 6.5 games ahead of the Skanks.

If the Sox Win 2: They will be 4.5 games ahead of the Skanks in the AL East.

If the Sox win 1: They will be 2.5 games ahead of the AL East.

If the Sox are Swept: They will be .5 games ahead of the Skanks in the AL East.

To sum it up, the Sox are playing with house money here. Even if they lose all 3 games, they will still hold their lead against the Skanks in the AL East (although if Toronto wins their next 3 games, they will push the Sox to 2nd place by a 1/2 game).

I think it’s pretty unlikely the Sox will all of a sudden crash and burn and lose all 3 games to the Skanks–but of course it is possible because:

1.) Its baseball–and anything can happen

    2.) It’s the Skanks–and anything can happen

3.) The historic beginning of the 2018 campaign cannot last forever; they will have to come down to earth eventually–right?

Hopefully that is later rather than sooner. Like after they beat the snot out of the Skanks this week…

Finally, I think someone needs to talk to Brock Holt about his choice of walk-out music. Hi choice for yesterday’s contest? Whitney’s “I’ll Always Love you”…

    Seriously???

Coming up: Another off-day today, and then the Sox host 3 against the Skanks, kicking off 19 (CHECK) games between the ballclubs. Chris Sale and his 82 cents ERA (.082) takes the bump, opposed by Luis Severino, who hasn’t sucked this season (2-0 with a 1.38 ERA) 1st pitch, 7:10pm…
