    February 14, 2017:
    Pitchers and Catchers!

Posted by Christine E. at 4:38 pm in Baseball,Legal,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Holy Buckets! It’s like 22 degrees here, and summer seems OH SO far away, but the boys of summer have already started arriving in Florida and are gearing up for a gearing up for what I hope to be a GREAT 2017 campaign.

All indications seem to point in that direction. The Sox were a decent team last year, despite the issues with some of the starters being inconsistent (David Price I’m looking at you, because That Clay Person is no longer our problem.), but Rick Porcello won the Cy Young–even if he melted down in the postseason…and really was the Ace of the team.

And then Dave Dombrowski went and got Chris Sale, who is an AMAZING pitcher. However, he is also a world-class jerk. So we can hope that we get more of the amazing and less of the jerk. And if that is the case, I really think they will be in the mix for October/November baseball.

I mean honestly Chris Sale, Rick Porcello, and David Price. And a healthy Steven Wright, And Eduardo Rodriguez, or Drew Pomeranz actually pitching to their potential…

Even those who do this for a living think so: mytopsportsbooks.com believes “The Boston Red Sox are still strong contenders for the next World Series…” So there is that.

Of course, this is baseball, fickle mistress that she is, anything can happen, but unless everyone under performs, or the Sox have a really big run of injuries, I am really looking forward to seeing them not only play this year, but do reallyREALLY well…

And Holy Buckets, have you SEEN Pablo Sandoval??? He is positively SVELTE, and pretty much unrecognizable from last year when he was one of the  last players to arrive at Spring Training, and he was breaking his belts and could only lumber along. THIS year, he came to spring training early, in shape, obviously spending a lot of time in the offseason getting himself back to where he needs to be. The last time he got himself in this type of shape was 2011, and his performance was good enough to get him to his first All-Star Game with a triple slash of 315/.357/.552 for that season…Let’s hope the same happens for the 2017 campaign.

The first workout of the season for all of those who arrived earlier was yesterday, with 25 (!) already in attendance. The first official full squad workout does not occur until next Friday the 17th…

Let the discussion begin: Who should be the Opening Day Starter on April 3rd against the Bucs? What makes it even more interesting this year is that they are actually starting the season at Fenway, which is something they have not done in a while (Since 2010 when Josh Beckett started against the Skanks), so they cannot split the honor like they have the last couple years. I think it should be Rick Porcello, the reigning Cy Young winner, and the only 20+ (22) game winner the Sox have had since 2007, which was, coincidently, also Josh Beckett. But will Chris Sale then get all mad and pouty? Be interesting to see how THAT plays out…

Shatner-333Finally, The Topps Company continued their tradition of kicking off the baseball season, which it has done since 1952, by launching their annual Baseball Series. This 29-card set, which comes out in 3 separate sections (Series 1 is out now)throughout the baseball season, includes “fan favorites, superstars, up-and-coming rookies” and other things of interest to the baseball collector. For the Fenway connection, Stars Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk, William Shatner is featured on a card for 2017, which commemorates his throwing out the first pitch at a Red Sox game back on August 12th of 2016…

Coming up: Baseball has begun! Whoo Hoo! The first actual game of the season (not against a college team) will be against the Mets on the 24th–yep, real live actual baseball…

    Let the games begin!
