    January 13, 2017:
Friday the 13th AND a Full Moon?

031108_eclipse_jeff_dunn_02While I am not particularly superstitious (I’m a lighting designer, amongst other things, so I walk under ladders, cause it takes too freaking long to walk around. I also own a black cat and my lucky/favorite number is 13), that’s a pretty interesting cosmic double whammy, and apparently will not happen again for like 32 years–or 2049…

So, after a month of holiday celebrations, parties, far too much fudge from Stone Harbor, Christmas ducks for my kid, and of course, the obligatory holiday sickness that felled both of us (I’m looking at you, stomach “thing”), we are looking at 31 days to Pitchers and Catchers, 40 days to the first “real” Spring Training game–against the Mets, and 79 days to Opening Day…

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Truck Day is a little more than 2 weeks away. The “unofficial” start of Spring Training for the Sox begins when the Truck leaves Fenway Park and travels to Florida filled with not only baseball stuff–but a million and one things the members of the Red Sox may need…This year’s Truck Day is Monday, February 6th….

And in about 2 weeks, I’ll be stockpiling the coffee on that fateful Saturday morning to buy our tickets for this season, with my daughter getting her very own ticket for the first time…which is crazy, because she was like a tiny baby like 15 minutes ago–I swear…

    So, anyway…

In a move that surprises NO ONE, Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Xander Bogaerts re-signed with the Sox for 1-year, $3.6 and $4.5 Million contracts, respectively, thereby both of them avoiding arbitration. I know they do this a lot–they will one-sie this forever, but Holy Buckets, WHY ONLY ONE YEAR CONTRACTS??? For these two??? Fracking weird if you ask me….

Also re-signing for one-year deals are Joe Kelly, BrockStar, Sandy Leon, Robbie Ross, Jr. and Tyler Thornberg.

So of the 9 arbitration eligible players, two remain in limbo: Drew Pomeranz, and Fernando Abad. Drew I can understand, but why oh why are they not getting rid of Abad–he is terrible!

But, since the Sox haven’t actually DONE an arbitration hearing since 2001 when they and Rolando Arroyo could not agree, I don’t think these two will break the streak…

Finally, in a rather bizarre move (although considering the source, maybe not so much), Manny Ramirez will play ball again, signing with the independent Japanese team the Kochi Fighting Dogs. And he is on the ballot for the Hall of Fame this year. Go figure…

Coming up: Next Wednesday the 18th, the Hall of Fame will release the class of 2017–if there are any. Curt Schilling is up for his 5th time, but there are those who believe his political opinions and the like will impact his ability to get in the hall. He was at 52.3% on last year’s ballot. Tim Raines is in his final year on the ballot and had 69.8% last year–will he get the boost he needs in the final year? And how bout Jeff Bagwell, who garnered 71.6% of the vote in his 6th year on the ballot, narrowly missing the 75% needed. Should be an interesting year, especially since a LOT of Red Sox old friends are on the ballot for the first time this year, including Manny, J. D. Drew, Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek, The OC, Orlando Cabrera, and Freddie Sanchez….
