    December 8, 2016:
Well, the Sox got Pitchers for Christmas…

Posted by Christine E. at 7:38 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

    Just like I hoped for…

So why doesn’t this deal make me more excited for 2017?

Because while I really like the deal that is bringing one of the best relievers you have never heard of, Tyler Thornburg to the Sox–although I am disappointed to see Travis Shaw leave…

I just reallyREALLY do not like the Chris Sale deal.

I don’t really have an issue with the players that went, although I think the secret and strength to a great team that will contend year after year is a strong farm system, and this deal did reduce that. And it’s not that Sale isn’t a GREAT pitcher (He went 17-10 with a 3.34 ERA and 6 (!!) complete games in 2016—and oh, he’ll be 28 by the time the season starts… and that a rotation of him AND Rick Porcello AND David Price (who will hopefully right the ship in 2017) AND Stephen Wright AND Eduardo Rodriguez AND Drew Pomeranz, and yes, even That Clay Person is freaking A-MAZE-ING.

I just reallyREALLY do not like Chris Sale.

I think he is obnoxious, and opens his mouth when it’s not his place–like with how he ran his mouth off about Adam LaRoche and the fact that White Sox management didn’t want La Roche’s kid to have a 24/7 all-access pass, which ostensibly led to him retiring from the game (Of course, hitting .207 with 133 strikeouts in 126 games the year before had nothing to do with it). But one of the Cardinal Rule of Parenting (which, if more people followed it, the world would be a MUCH better place) is: not your kid, not your business. And then there is the whole cutting up thousands of dollars of vintage uniforms ’cause he didn’t want to wear it. He was suspended 5 games for it, but I bet he’d do it again-cause based on what I heard, he felt completely justified in his actions….

He talks about how excited he is to play for Boston and “win a ring”, buy what happens if he struggles, and the fans express their displeasure, or the media gets up in his grill? He says he is not a big media guy, and only focuses on the game (yeah, OK), but how is he going to handle criticism? Maybe he’ll be fine with it, but he just seems like a bit of a precious snowflake…

But he’s here, and making less in 2017 ($12 million) than That Clay Person ($13.5), who could be moved if the right deal could be made….and THAT certainly wouldn’t make me sad or anything.

As I mentioned Travis Shaw was traded, which means Pablo Sandoval pretty much got his job back. Which could have been a cause for concern, but holy Buckets! Have you SEEN HIM LATELY??? He is lean and TRIM and looks like a totally different person! Wow! Now, as long as he stays on the path of righteousness and doesn’t eat Argentina or something between now the Spring Training, I think the Sox have themselves a 3rd baseman…cause when his weight is not an issue he is a fracking GREAT baseball player….

And in an interesting move, the Sox also signed free agent first baseman Mitch Moreland to a 1-year, $5.5 Million contract. The 2016 Golden Glove winner is coming from Texas, and I expect the plan is to allow Hanley to do more DH-ing, now that the Large Father has retired.

Although….David Ortiz did tweet the other nights that all these signings gave him pause about his retirement. If only…

Coming up: Today was the last day of the Winter Meetings, and I think it’s safe to say the Sox were winners at this one. So now Christmas will be here in like 20 minutes, so its times to break out the Sox Christmas swag, open a bottle of Red Sox wine, and sit in front of the Christmas tree FULL of Red Sox ornaments…

Just as soon as I do like 465,000 things first…
