ALDS Game 3: Red Sox 3, Cleveland 4
    Out With a Whimper…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:48 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Ya know, in some ways I think it would have been better for the Sox NOT to have won the AL East and gotten to the postseason (Stay with me here for a minute). Because the end in the Postseason is often sudden and can’t be planned for (Although in this case, I think the writing was on the wall). And when the season ends suddenly, there was no opportunity to properly honor David Ortiz on the last game of his career. And then there is the whole “let’s try and celebrate his last game while the other team is celebrating in our house…”

I had my hand on the change channel button for the last 10 minutes of the game, ready to turn it off the instant the Sox lost–because I had no desire to see that nonsense. And my hatred for Jason Kipnis grew more last night when he caught that liner by Xander with 2 on in the 8th inning, ending yet another attempted rally by the Red Sox…I fully expected there would be interviews with that tool, and I had NO desire to see that nonsense…

And I can’t even blame That Clay Person for this one. Rick Porcello and David Price got lit up, setting the stage for an impossible task for a headcase who hates pressure. And his junior college friend/teammate Josh Tomlin was DEALING last night…so it was a matter of who blinked first…

It was JBJ going 1-10 with 7 strikeouts, and Hanley going 3-12 with 4 strikeouts and Mookie Betts going 2-10, and hell, even David Ortiz going 1-9 with 2 walks and a strikeout….

Three Red Sox players hit homers in this series. Andrew Benintendi, Sandy Leon, and Brock Holt. THAT’S IT. If you had predicted that, you could have made A LOT of money…

So am I disappointed? Absolutely. Am I surprised? Not at all. Cleveland out played the Red Sox–on every level…

However, I could have done without the Coco Crisp two run homer off Pomeranz in the 6th inning. There is nothing worse than being beat by a former player–although in this case, there was a heap of them: Andrew Miller, Coco, Napoli, and of course, Tito…

And my friend Paul from Boston brought up a great point: If it’s a Cubs/Indians World Series–it will be like a Red Sox All-Star Game. And let’s face it, a GIANT F**K you to King Larry Lucchino…

Speaking of World Series, a Cubs/ Cleveland matchup is only one of the few that will actually not result in the World Series of Boring…

So let’s break it down. We have the Toronto and Indians in the ALCS, and the Cubs and the Nationals are up 2-1 against the Dodger and Giants respectively. Despite my less than stellar predictions so far (We’ll get to that in a minute), I am going to say the NLDS is going to be the Cubs and the Nationals (Remind me AGAIN how the Nationals got to the postseason??)

I think it’s going to be Cleveland in 4 and Cubs in 5. For what it’s worth….And if it is, THAT will be compelling baseball. Theo vs Tito. Cubs haven’t won a WS since 1908, Cleveland since 1948. That is 108 and 68 years. Holy Buckets!

If either team gets there without the other, it’s still interesting, but not as compelling. If it’s Toronto and the Nationals? My friends, we will have The World Series of Boring…and I will likely not watch a second of it…

And….With regard to my predictions thus far, Got ’em ALL wrong…

My guesses for the ALDS (Sox and 5 and Texas in 4) was totally off, as both teams got swept. The Cubs and Dodgers are playing game 4 today, so my prediction of Cubs in 3 is gone. And it looks like the Nationals are more likely to win than the Dodgers at this point, so the Dodgers in 4 doesn’t work either

Finally, it was announced this afternoon that John Farrell will be keeping his job for 2017–which I am not sure is such a big deal, as he has a contract for 2017. But nothing has been said about the option for 2018. If they don’t resolve that, next year will be CONSTANTLY about how John Farrell is playing without a contract, and are they going to give him a contract, or are they going to fire him and give someone else a contract… UGH. While some of his decisions were questionable, this team was LAST in 14/15–and this year won the AL East…How is this not an upgrade???

Coming up: More NLDS, with the ALCS between Cleveland and Toronto coming up on Friday. Even if it IS an Indians/Cubs WS–it’s going to be a loooooooong off-season–with a bunch of gaps to fill…

But that is a discussion for another day, or bunch of other days…

Tribe/Cubs World Series: Baseball Gods, make this happen…
