    May 24, 2016:
    9 Red Thoughts a 1/4 of the Way Through.

    Posted by Christine E. at 7:41 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

    So the Sox are about 25% through the season (give or take a game or three), and with the off-day, I figured a Top 9 List would be fitting. These are in no particular order, it’s just a list of 9…Here we go:

    1) So the Sox are tied with the Cookies for first place in the AL East, and hold the 2nd best win % in the AL, and 3rd in all of MLB. How the frack are the Cubbies holding onto a win % near SEVEN HUNDRED (.674). With that, they are on pace to win 109 games, which is not only in the top 3 of modern W-L records (Seattle with (inexplicably) 116 in 2001, and the Skanks with 114 in 1998. Could a Red Sox/Cubs World Series actually happen in my lifetime?

    2) That Clay Person Needs.To.Go. NOW. Honestly, he is like the anti-Josh Beckett (well, re-2011, anyway) Remember when Josh would go out and pitch, and we would be all shocked when he actually lost? That is Buchholz is reverse. Every time he is on the mound, unless the Sox score a crap-ton of runs, he has a bad inning, misses his pitches, can’t locate his fastball, tries to be too fine, blah blah blah…and the end result is 2-4 with a 5.92 ERA. While there are a number of other starters who have not so wonderful ERA’s (David Price’s icky 5.53), he also has 6 wins, and 70 strikeouts in 55.1 innings. That Clay Person? 35 strikeouts in 51.2 innings. Oh, and Clay has given up an average of 1 homer per outing (9 in 9 starts) in 2016–compared to David Prices 1/2 of a homer (5 in 9 starts).

    Blech…

    3) So much for Carson Smith. He was gone for so long, ostensibly with flexor strain, then came back, threw less than 3 innings (all were scoreless), and now he needs Tommy John which means he is gone for at least a year, but even then it could be some time until he gets back to where he was. So for now, it’s a pretty big hit to the bullpen. However, he is a young player who didn’t cost a ton (he is currently at the league minimum of $507.500, and can remain there next year as well), so while it sucks, we can hope he will bounce back and be just as good, if not better…

    Apropos of nothing, can you imagine making THAT kind of minimum wage??? Yes, please.

    4) Speaking of bouncing back, looks like Joe Kelly may be back on the path to righteousness after being on the DL for nearly a month with right shoulder impingement. His first start back took a no-no into the 7th inning on Saturday against Cleveland, ending up with a win, and a really nice line: 6.2 IP, giving up 1 hit, no runs, while walking 3 and striking out 7. He threw 104 pitches, 70 for strikes. If he can keep this up, it will be a nice addition to the rotation.

    5) So Eduardo Rodriguez was shelved for a start in Pawtucket because he knee was bothering him, but will be making another minor league start tonight. He has been on the DL since April 2nd, and there are concerns about not only his knee, but his velocity has been down and he doesn’t seem to be bouncing back. But now apparently he has a new knee brace and has a strong side session over the weekend. I really hope he get back on the path, because the Sox really need him back…

    6) And you know how the saying goes that the truth is stranger than fiction? Cause Holy Buckets did anyone ever see JBJ not only hitting .342 with 8 homers and 33 RBI’s (and a OPS of .413), but riding a TWENTY SEVEN game hitting streak?? I personally just wanted him to hit .270-.280, so his magical glove could stay in Center Field. Cause his career average before this year is .212. Yes, go read that again, I’ll wait…

    7) So the Sox play Colorado for the rest of this week, before they head up to Canada for the weekend. So we are in interleague play. Thankfully, it’s at Fenway, so we don’t have to hear everyone go on and one and on about David Ortiz and how he should play first base, but then he shouldn’t play first base, blah blah blah…Have I even mentioned I freaking HATE interleague play? Takes away the entire mystique. The AL should play the NL twice a year: The All -Star Game and the World Series. And do not get me started on the whole All- Star Game impacts the World Series stuff…

    8) Speaking of David Ortiz. Despite people clamoring for him to rethink his retirement (I am likely one of the minority who thinks he should go out in a blaze of glory, rather than limping, old and injured, like some other players who recently retired…), he is still adamant 2016 is his last season. Although Big Papi’s numbers do belie someone who is 40 years old, with a slash line of .329/.408/.684 (!!) in 40 games. Let’s see if his thoughts change as the season progresses…

    9) And speaking of DH’s. Some sportswriter/blogger (I blocked it out) actually threw out the thought that perhaps the Sox should look at Mark Teixeira as a potential DH replacement when The Large Father actually does retire. Uh No…Or, if that isn’t clear enough, how bout:

    NO@&%!*%@!!@(&!^@I&!%*#!%#&^#&^#&&*@!^%^#&%^!% WAY!!!

    Coming up: The Sox finish up their 6 -game home stand with 3 against Colorado. David Price looks for his 7th win as he takes the bump in tonight’s contest, opposed by Jorge De La Rosa. 1st pitch 7:10pm.
