Red Sox 3, Oreos 5: Holy Buckets! Less than a week!

I have no idea why I was convinced Opening Day was Friday, April 1st.

Wishful thinking? Or maybe it’s because I have done nothing but WRITE for more than 6 weeks straight as part of my Master’s Degree Finals…So I guess it’s not that unexpected that I am a little bit crispy…

So, anyway, It’s not the 1st, it’s the 4th, which is probably better, cause then I will be able to actually spend some time watching some games next week–although not on Monday, as Monday is my daughter’s dance class, so it looks like Wednesday the 6th will be my first game of the 2016 campaign, and I fully expect to have to watch That Clay Person start, as David Price will be getting the start on Monday. Blech…

So the celebratory events marking The Large Father’s last year in the bigs have begun, with a street naming in his honor at JetBlue Park. Yes, replacing Canvas Alley is now David Ortiz Way. Nice gesture, but I think the politicos of Lee County (where the Florida version of Fenway lives) could have coughed up a real street, or alley…But that’s just me…

Although he did get seats from each of the 3 places in Fort Myers he called home over his 20 year career: Hammond Stadium, City of Palms, and JetBlue Park.

Oh, and Ric Porcello sucked. Again. In 6 2/3 innings this weekend, he gave up 5 runs on 10 hits (including THREE Homers) while walking 3 and striking out 5. So that leaves him with a nifty 9.77 ERA and a 0-2 record for the spring in 4 starts.

    OUTSTANDING…

OK, I know, its only spring training, but he was 9-15 with 4.98 ERA in 28 outings last year. Yes, he did better towards the end of the year, but holy hell he was awful…and I am just not feeling the love here…

But someone who is not sucking this Spring Training is Joe Kelly, who started this afternoon with a sparkling 1.35 ERA and a 3-0 record , and then lost today’s contest against the Twin, and giving up 3 homers in the process. UGH. But 3-1 with a 2.63 ERA is a damn sight better than Porcello’s dismal numbers. Hey, maybe we COULD see a Cy Young discussion here is 2016. Hey, it could happen…

And as the cuts continue in the last week, I was sad to see that David Murphy has exercised his opt-out, and has been released from the team. I really liked him, and was happy to hear he signed a minor league contract. He has been saying he may retire, but I suspect that depends on if he can get a major league gig somewhere else….

Speaking of a gig somewhere else, apparently the Padres may be interested in Sandoval, as they sent a scout to look at him the other day. Kinda crappy timing, because Panda’s back is all stiff and he was out for a bunch of days only started playing again. And I am not going to say anything about the injury, and the 17% body fat. I’m not….Nope…

But I will say this: Travis Shaw needs to be the starting third baseman of the Boston Red Sox. Like NOW…

It looks like we may have another knuckleballer in the starting 5, as Stephen Write continued to make a compelling argument for his inclusion, with a 2.66 ERA and 1-2 record in 4 starts, including a nice outing against the Phillies on Sunday. I don’t expect this will be a long-term thing, as Eduardo Rodriguez will be back in May, and Henry Owens and Brian Johnson are in Pawtucket.

Looks like Christian Vazquez’s season will start on the DL in Pawtucket. His DL stint will be 20 days, and then it will be interesting to see if they leave him down there for a while, or bring him back up to the bigs.

And let me just tell you how THRILLED I am that Brock Holt will be the starting Left Fielder against left-handed pitching, he is a GREAT player and teammate, and it is wholly deserved…

Finally, Happy 149th Birthday to Cy Young—how neat would it have been to see you play now…

Coming up: Split squad action tomorrow, with half of the team playing the Pirates (David Price gets the start), and half playing Tampa Bay (William Cuevas takes the bump in this contest–Nope, never heard of him either…) Both Games are at 1:05 pm
