July 10, 2015: Closing out the First Half of 2015.

Posted by Christine E. at 8:19 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

So the Sox are riding a 4-game winning streak, Ric Porcello actually WON a game, and brought his ERA under 6 (yes, check for pods…), and the Sox have won 8 out of their last 10 contests, which puts the Sox in a very interesting position for this weekend’s series against the first place Skanks.

But before we get to that…

So. I get that the KC Royals are having a great season this year, and their fans went kinda nuts and voted in 82 of their players to start next week’s All-Star game, most of which the rest of the world has never heard of (Lorenzo Cain? Alcides Escobar? Nope, me either), so why the FRACK did they get ANOTHER player (3rd baseman Mike Moustakas) for the Final Vote? WTF? Because SIX wasn’t enough? Interestingly, Alex Gordon is on the DL, so Final Vote Skankee Brett Gardner got his spot, so there are really only 4 left. And Xander Bogaerts, who REALLY should be there (come of think of it, so should Mookie Betts, but that’s a conversation for another day) was last in the voting. W…T…F…?

OK, it’s been a while, but as I have mentioned so very frequently, this season has really held little interest for me. Mostly because they have been BAD, but it is also there fact that what little free time I do have these days, I’d rather do something that DOESN’T make me want to hurl heavy objects at my TV…

And one of the things that makes me crazy(er) is if the Sox were playing halfway decent, they could be 10 games ahead of everyone is this suddenly toothless division. I mean honestly? The Skanks are the best in the AL East with a .541 win %, 46 wins, and there are only 5.5 games that separate the best and the worst?

As a reference point, the team with the best record in the American League is, you guessed it, the KC Royals. THEY have a .602 winning %, with 50 wins and there are ELEVEN games that separate them from the worst team in their division, the AL Central: The White Sox…

    So anyway, To The Blackboard!

The Sox are dead last (UGH) 5.5 games behind the first place Skanks, with 3 games coming up this weekend, the last contests before the All-Star Break, which we all know is the unofficial first half of the season. This weekend could really be the start of something great, or an ever BIGGER Red Flag that the Sox will should be sellers at the trade deadline on July 31st.

If the Sox Sweep: They will head into the ASB 2.5 games behind the Skanks, which puts them right back in the thick of things…

If the Sox Win 2: They pick up a game in the standings, and will sit 4.5 games behind the Skanks. Not super impressive, but certainly better than nothing.

If the Sox win 1: They lose a game in the standing, and will be 6.5 games behind when the 2nd half of the season starts next week.

If the Sox are swept: 8.5 games behind. ‘Nuf said…

While I think a sweep is unlikely, I do think the Sox can win 2 out of 3 this weekend. They are currently 4-2 against the Skanks for the 2015 campaign, including a sweep at Fenway in May.

This series is pretty much where the rubber meets the road, so we will see…

Coming up: Game 1. That Clay Person, who has been pitching pretty well, which is a positive, had his worst outing of the season came against the Skanks in April when he couldn’t get out of the 4th inning, and gave up 10 runs. And that was without A-Fraud, who pretty much owns him, with a .407 BA. So there is that. Then there is Michael Pineda is 50/50 against the Sox– literally, with a 2-2 record with a 5.40 ERA in four starts against the ballclub. So I think this one could go either way–which is usually the case when the Sox play the Skanks. I may even watch this—if it’s not blacked out, which is entirely likely…First pitch 7:10pm.
