Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 6: Closer and Closer…

Posted by Christine E. at 7:57 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

So it’s the first day of spring, most of the snow has been cleared from Fenway (I’ve seen pictures), and we got 3-5 inches here in Pennsylvania…

    Outstanding…

But the boys of summer are still hard at work in sunny and warm Florida, getting reading for Opening Day on April 6th. What a shock it will be to go from THAT to THIS, especially for those who hail from much further south.

I’ve always wondered about that. Maybe Spring Training should be somewhere more in between, so there isn’t a 30+ degree temperature change from when they leave Florida and arrive in Boston. And the way this winter has been, I completely do not discount the possibility of snow in April–or even May…

But as along as the weather is good and (That Clay Person isn’t the starter) for June 25th, I’ll be a happy camper….

And speaking of, how about Mookie Betts! He is ripping the COVER off the ball in Spring Training (.448 with 7 extra base hits–including 2 triples), making amazing defensive plays all over the place, and he is reallyREALLY fast–I definitely think this center field slot is his to lose…

Oh, and he is 22 years old…

The other 22-year old, pitcher Henry Owens hasn’t fared so well, getting beat up by Toronto’s lineup yesterday–including giving up a homer to heavy hitter Jose Bautista. His line: 3+ IP, giving up 5 runs on 5 hits (including 2 homers) while walking and striking out 1. He is expected to be with Pawtucket for at least another year, although I expect we will see him for at least one spot start in 2015….

And apropos of nothing: The name of the Blue Jays Spring Training Complex? Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. Lamest name EVER…Sounds more appropriate for NASCAR…

And Rusney Castillo made a return to the lineup in today’s loss to the Oreos, with a 3-run shot in the 7th. He has been out of commission since March 3rd, when he strained his left oblique during the game against Boston College…

Koji is starting to long toss and rehabbing his hamstring. I reallyREALLY hope he gets better soon–because, one, he’s Koji, and two, his replacement is Edward Mujica 2-4 with a 3.90 ERA…

    Yeah…

But it looks like Joe Kelly had a good bullpen yesterday, which means he will likely make his start on Sunday, not losing any time because of the bicep tightness he had, which cause to leave his last start early. He weighs in: “Definitely a good step to try and pitch in two days. My arm is feeling good right now. I feel really confident where I’m going to be at in two days.”

The Spring Training cuts have begun, reducing the count to 51 with less than 3 weeks to go. The 6 cuts (Miguel Celestino, Keith Counch, Sean Coyle, Bryan LaHair, and Noe Ramirez) were all optioned to Pawtucket, or reassigned to Minor League Camp.

Oh, and in SHOCKING news: Jake is injured! This time it’s ab strain, he is off for a couple of days….Still think this signing was a good thing, Brian Cashman?

And how bout THIS gem? Will Middlebrooks’ feelings when the Sox signed the Panda: “(it) stung a little bit, just because I cared so much about being a part of that team.” Yeah, OK, then why did you tell the team you thought better than to play winter ball, after sucking and being injured in recent years???? While the end result may have been the same, don’t pull the victim thing–You were culpable in your own demise with the Sox….

Coming up: The Sox head to McKechnie Field in Bradenton to play Pittsburg. Wade Miley takes the bump for the Sox…1st pitch 1:05pm…

    16 days….
