    November 24, 2014:
    Finally going to catch up…

Posted by Christine E. at 1:22 pm in Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

As the Hot Stove continues to heat up, some random thoughts as I work on my final project for my Testing and Assessment’s class, get ready for Turkey Day, and wrack my brain on what to get my toddler for Christmas–and then actually find the time to go out and do that…

    Yeah…

But holy buckets! The Ben Cherington and Co seems to be making some magic, reportedly signing Pablo Sandoval to a $100 million-ish/ 5 year contract. I know he is a postseason big deal, the Sox need a 3rd baseman, and David Ortiz’s Dorian Grey act is not going to last forever, but I am not super impressed. He’s got weight issues–and it’s never a good thing when a player has weigh issues–it makes them more prone to injury, and sluggish in a position where you really need a player who can move well…If I were a betting girl, this is not the player I would be betting on…

I am super impressed that they signed Hanley Ramirez, who was also reportedly signed for a $88 million/4-year deal, with a 5th year vested option of $22 million. I just hope he had grown up from his immature antics…and the injury thing isn’t going to become a thing…

Yes, I wanted the Sox to do SOMETHING, after then precious little last year. HOWEVER. $190 million-ish for 2 players, both of which have issues, is a bit troubling to me…

And how bout that $325 million THIRTEEN year deal Loria put on the table for Giancarlo Stanton???? Here are my thoughts: Loria is a cheapskate who has actually had PAYROLLS in the $30 million range–FOR EVERYONE ON THE TEAM. So what kind of drugs is he on? But ok, let’s say he had a lobotomy, or a come to Jesus moment or WHATEVER. With that kind of deal on the books, it will be just like it was with A-Fraud and Texas–a great, but horribly overpaid player on a team surrounded by mediocre talent because there is NO MONEY TO BUY ANYONE ELSE. We all know the Rangers didn’t get good until A-Fraud left–yes, part of that was because he is a crappy human–but a big part of it was his ridiculous and completely unnecessary contract prevented them for being able to buy any decent talent…

And think about it: This contract will run until 2027—When Stanton will be 37 years old…I’ll take Loria will dump that contract in 6 years in the contract pool….

Speaking of decent talent. Rock star and super hero Brock Holt is fully recovered from his concussion, and has resumed his off-season training program without issues. I am interested to see if he can repeat his exceptional performance of 2014…and since he can play pretty much every position well, he’s got a good shot at sticking with the club all year–IF his bat is consistent…

So, the Sox have made an offer to Jon Lester, somewhere in the $110-120 million/6 year range. Why oh why oh WHY did they not make this offer when he was actually playing with the Sox in 2014??? No, they offer their ACE a crap deal 4 years and $70 million…I don’t freaking get it. But, Jon is apparently going to take his sweet time making a decision. He has 2 other deals on the table besides the Sox, and is talking to them as well. I want him back, but I think the way management has gone about this. SUCKS…

Finally, the Hall of Fame Class of 2015 has been announced, and WOW, what an impressive bunch–34 names, 17 each of old and new. It will be interesting to see if any of them get in unanimously, and which ones get in on the first shot…Some seem like a lock to me: Pedro, and The Big Unit; But John Smoltz and Troy Percival make a compelling argument. Nomar is on the ballot as well, but I am not sure his injuries didn’t do him in. And then there are some that are just…No: Aaron Boone, Tony Clark, Brian Giles… Last year was the first time 3 first year ballot guys made the cut–can they do it again? You can see the rest of the list here…

Coming up: The Hot Stove Continues, will the Sox make any more moves? Or, more accurately, do the Sox have more money to spend? We’ll see…
