    November 12, 2014:
Catching up on the Catch Up…

Posted by Christine E. at 7:49 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

A bunch o’ random thoughts as I am still trying to find my desks after spending a week in Tennessee with my toddler daughter (which included first plane ride). She was better behaved that a lot of the adults we saw on our journey…

112 Days to an actual baseball game. Against a major league team. While it’s not a real game that means something, the first game the Red Sox will play in spring training happens on the road, then they take on the Twins on March 5th. The first game at home is against the Fish the next day…The “beat the crap out of the college teams” contests will be a day/night doubleheader on March 3rd…

So the “the Sox are going to sign Lester for the moon, the stars, and Larry Lucchino’s left leg, cause they are committed to winning!” stuff has started. Uh huh. While I would like nothing better than to see Jon Lester in a Red Sox uniform, standing on the mound on April 6th, my position still is: If they wanted him, why not sign him when they HAD him–it would have been must cheaper (and a lot less circuitous)… I’m not saying it will never happen in a million years…I’m just saying I am not willing to bet the farm it’s going to happen…

And “Big Game James” Shields? Ugh. Please. NO…

Why do people insist on playing the “if the Sox get “X” it will guarantee they will get to the dance in 2015″ One person, no matter how amazing they are, holds the key. If that were the case, the Sox would have made it to the postseason/won the World Series every year that Ted Williams played for the Sox. So while signing Pablo Sandoval is an intriguing idea (I personally think he is going to be WAY too expensive) he is not the “missing link” that is keeping the Sox from the postseason…

However, I do believe that NOT signing a player can impact a team’s chances of winning. Case in point: I will forever believe that if the Sox did sign A-Fraud in the offseason of 03-04, they would have never won the WS in 2004. Not only because the Sox would have traded Manny, Jon Lester (!) and Nomar (who would be gone in 6 months anyway), but because if there is one player who pretty much WRECKS any team he plays for, it would be A-Fraud… And for the record, I NEVER wanted him, despite the Skankee fans who argue that all Red Sox fans wanted him. UGH. NO.

Speaking of A-Fraud, the speculation has already started as to what is going to happen next year, as it’s been like 18 years in dog years since A-fraud picked up a bat. Will he retire? Will he force the Skanks to find a place for him? I think he should stay and play–mess with their cake, payroll and clubhouse…Fun times!

So the trend continues: There were 12 free agents who were offered the $15.3 million, 1-year deal to stay with their current team (this year’s qualifying offer). Guess how many accepted? None. That’s not to say they will not re-sign with the original team, but now the field is wide open, and they can sign anywhere they want… And in case you were wondering, in the last 3 years, there has been 34 free agents offered qualifying offers by their ballclubs–and none of THEM have been accepted…Zero, Zip, Zilch, NADA…

Today was Day 2 of the GM meetings in Arizona, with nothing huge going on yet. The Winter Meetings in December seems to be where more things happen–or at least start to move…

Finally, reason # 498 why I love Jake Peavy: He buys reallyREALLY cool crap when his team wins a World Series. Last year it was the famous duck boat he rode in the Red Sox World Series Victory Parade. This year? A freaking CABLE CAR. Which he plans to turn into a bar. Can you imagine if he won in other places? If he won in Philly, would he buy the Liberty Bell? Or in St Louis, the big arch thingy? And there is a crap ton of things he could buy if he played and won in NY: The Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, a NY City Cab….

Coming up: Truck Day: February 12th (91 days). Pitchers and Catchers: February 20th (99 days). Mark your calendars…
