    Red Sox 3, Cincinnati 2:
Enough with the Interleague play already…

Posted by Christine E. at 3:56 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Call me a purist, but AL should old play NL twice a year: The All-Star game, and the World Series. And then there was the 2-3 week period in the middle of the season where the Sox played 4-5 National League teams and THAT was bad enough. NOW, they play a couple here, and a couple there ALL SEASON LONG. Hell, they kicked off their first home stand of 2014 against the fracking Brewers. And these 2 contests against the Reds aren’t the end of it; they still have three against the Bucs in their last road trip of the season–in mid-September…

Can we knock it off now?

So the Sox are playing .500 ball for the month of August so far, 5-5 since the trade deadline that sent just about everyone but That Clay Person somewhere else. Too early to tell if this was a success, but Yoenis Cespedes’ 2-run shot in the 8th (his 2nd in as many games) to give the Sox the win, backing the “new to us” pitcher Joe Kelly in his 2nd competent start for the Sox, certainly leads towards the trades being a good thing…Although they nev-A Ev-A should have traded Jon Lester…

Now, if they could JUST get rid of Buchholz…

Speaking of getting rid of. Jackie Bradley Jr. needs to go to Pawtucket and get himself right, cause this slump of epic proportions is reallyREALLY getting out of hand. Mercifully, he did not play last night, but Sunday night he was 0-4 with FOUR strikeouts in Sunday night’s win against the Angels. His BA is .211 (I am surprised it’s THAT high) he has struck out 107 times in 332 AB and he has not had a hit in his last 35…John Farrell weighs in: ‘We feel like there’s a better hitter in there, from a consistency standpoint. Whatever the average ultimately becomes, time will tell.” Not really sure what he exactly said there, but I think it was meant to be encouraging…

But ya know what? This kid is 24 years old, and this is his first full season in the bigs, and while his defense is astounding, it’s not enough. He needs to work this crap out, before he never digs himself out. And while there A LOT less pressure playing in Boston this season, as they uh, SUCK. It’s still too bright a spotlight in which to work…

Neato Stat #1: And how ’bout this coolness? Red Sox pitcher Joe Kelly actually STOLE A BASE (yes, go back and read that again–I’ll wait) in the 3rd inning. The last time a Sox pitcher did this? 1969, the last time a Red Sox pitcher stole 3rd base? Ten years earlier, in 1959. This is Kelly’s first stolen base of his career.

Neato Stat #2: In his last 11 games, Dustin Pedroia has found his mojo, batting .367 during that span…

Finally, the new Commish will probably be named this week, as the owners will vote Thursday on whom they would like to replace the used car salesman. I think it’s gonna be right hand man Rob Manfred, but rumor around town is there is a voting bloc who is trying to get Red Sox Chair Tom Werner in there…The Commissioner-Elect will take office in January 2015.

Oh, and yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the baseball strike, which saw 1994 without a World Series, and lasted 232 days finally ending on April 2, 1995…

Coming up: the 2nd game of this quickie series against the Reds, which complement the 2 they played against them in May at Fenway (they won both). Anthony Ranaudo, in his 2nd big league start, takes the place of the struggling Brandon Workman (thankfully) and will oppose Mike Leake for Cincinnati. 1st pitch: 12:35pm
