    Red Sox 14, Toronto 1:
    This is MADNESS…

Posted by Christine E. at 7:10 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

So. For first 90 or so games, the 2014 permutation of the Boston Red Sox were playing like my grandmother’s softball league (if she actually ever had a softball league..), where it looked like they needed an act of congress to score any runs, much less actually WIN a game…

And then they DFA, and ultimately release AJ Pierzynski. And proceed to win their last 8 out of 9 games.

Coincidence? Or something more? Could one guy really be SUCH a distraction and SUCH a malcontent as to cause the level the suckage the Sox had attained in the first (essentially) part of the season? I don’t know. But SOMETHING is going on, even if it’s just a momentary surge to suck me back into hoping, only to break my heart in a week or so…

We’ll see…But the next 12 games against the AL EAST (6 more against Toronto, 3 against the Cookies, and 3 against the Skanks) are where the rubber meets the road. This is IT, guys…

And if not, next Thursday July 31st could be very ugly…and very interesting…

HOWEVER, last night was one of those games where John Lackey didn’t need FOURTEEN runs…but he got them anyway. Pitching 7 brilliant innings (he could have went more, as he has only thrown 76 (!!) pitches (58 for strikes) with a 14 run lead–WHY????) He gave up 1 run on 2 hits while walking none and striking out 3 for his 11th win this season…

Felix Doubront (who has been VERY good out of the bullpen) and Craig Breslow contributed 2 scoreless innings, each with 2 strikeouts….

And then there was the offense. Stephen Drew: 3-run homer, David Ortiz: TWO 2-runs shots, with his second helping him pass YAZ on the homer list, and Mike Napoli with a solo homer to complete the home run-a rama that was last night’s contest…And a 6-run 5th inning–how I have MISSED 6-run innings…

And Holy Buckets! Did you SEE that catch Brock Holt made in the 5th?? He totally stole that homer from Dan Johnson. What is there NOT to like about that kid–Uh NOTHING…

And the Flyin Hawaiian, Shane Victorino, was back in the lineup this weekend and played 2 days in a row. John Farrell is taking care because of the Astroturf at the Rogers Centre, as it tends to be hard on players with leg issues…But he is still with the team…Let’s hope that trend continues…

Neato Stat: The Large Father is the only player in MLB history to have at least 20 homers in all of his 13 seasons, from 2002-2014. Do you think Minnesota still gnashes their teeth they let him go???

Oh, and because it’s been a couple days since I have said it: Ben: WTF. Why have you not signed Jon Lester????? 8 scoreless innings in Sunday’s contest is not good enough?

Coming up: Game 2 of the 4 game series against the spiraling Blue Jays (did anyone REALLY think they would continue to be #1 in the AL East???–Uh NO) Jake Peavy, still trying for his SECOND win of the year, takes the bump against J. A. Happ. Will Jake get some run support for a change? Enquiring minds want to know…First pitch 7:07pm
