    Red Sox 6, Oreos 2:
    They’re baaaaaack…

I love Mike Napoli. Not as much as I love Mike Lowell, but I love him nonetheless. While Jake Peavey bought a duck boat (and that is WAY cool), Mike Napoli walked through the streets of Boston, shirtless and drunk, mingling with the people the night the Sox had their victory parade.  Oh, and he hits BIG homers in big moments

WHAT is not to love about that kind of a guy???

And yesterday, he picked up right where he left off last season, with a 4-RBI day, including a 2-run jack in the 5th inning to put the Sox ahead for good, and a 2-run SINGLE for a little bit of insurance…

John Lackey put in a fine effort, with Lackey getting his first win of hte season with an strong 6-inning outing, 2 runs on 3-hits (including a 2-run shot to Nelson Cruz–who homered off Lester on Opening Day) while walking 1 an striking out 6. He threw 90 pitches, 68 for strikes.

Then Edward Mujica, Junichi Tazawa and Koji (who turned 39 today) all combined for 3 beautiful innings of ball, with each one only giving up 1 hit in their inning of work, as well as striking out 1 each.

And we are only 2 games into the season, and I am already fracking SICK of Nelson Cruz. He gets suspended for 50 games due to his part in the Biogenesis mess. No one wanted him in the offseason after he declined the qualifying offer ($14 million) from the Rangers, and he signs with the Cookies for $8 million, and hits 2 stinking homers in as many contests. Just pisses me off…And anyone who is going to start the “But Big Papi…” Just. Shut. It…

And speaking of. Yes, Big Papi got a selfie with the Leader of the Free World when the Sox visited the White House on Tuesday. No, it wasn’t planned. Yes, everyone thinks it’s fun and great and all that. But can we stop talking about it now? The column INCHES (or however it is now currently calculated on the interwebs) that have been used on this story is MIND BOGGLING. And yes, I am cognizant of the fact that I too have contributed to that…

And the first excellent Red Sox quote of the 2014 campaign goes to Johnny Gomes, in response to him getting his first start in the outfield in last night’s win: “It’s exciting. The other day wasn’t my turn, and that’s fine. I like to be in there, win or loss to try to affect the game. It will be nice and I’ll go out there and give it my all.” He reminds me of the team player attitude that Tim Wakefield had….

And with tomorrow’s ring ceremony, an interesting question is posed: Will the guys who are no longer with the Sox be there? Obviously, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jacoby Ellsbury will not. But Ryan Dempster, who is taking a year off, will be. But there is no word on whether Stephen Drew will be making an appearance. And yes, he is still unsigned. Or Jose Iglesias, who was traded to the Tigers last year in the Jake Peavey deal, who is out for the season with stress fractures in both legs…

And it still gives me a pang of regret that it took me all that time to learn how to spell “Saltalamacchia”, and he is no longer with the team. And, for the record, I can still spell Dougie Vowel’s last name: Mientkiewicz.

Coming up: The rubber match of the first series of 2014, Game 3 against the Oreos. Felix Doubront gets his first start of the season, opposed by Wei-Yin Chen. 1st pitch: 7:05pm.

And tomorrow is: RING DAY! Whooo Hoo! Already got the TiVo all ready to go…
