    February 19, 2014:
    Closer and Closer…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:41 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Today, the position players took their physicals (hopefully there were no surprises) and then the first full squad workout wil happen tomorrow morning…and then we are about a week away to actual games, evening if they aren’t particularly meaningful…

But it’s snowing here A-GAIN. So what happens if there is still snow at Fenway on April 4th? It could happen, if this snowing-every-day-for-the-last-47 continues…ok, maybe not 47 days in a row…it just feels like 47…

Oh, and in case you were wondering? It’s sunny and between 70-80 degrees at Fort Meyers. As much as I am not a fan of the Sunshine State, after 47 days of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and temps with wind chills of -30. I may have to rethink my position…

And then there is Johnny Gomes, whose response about all the questions about the fact that he shaved before reporting to Spring Training, is the best quote of the 2014 Campaign (so far): “I mean, it’s a friggin’ beard. No one died. We’re going to be all right. The beard didn’t hit or throw a fastball all year.” All that is left of the copious facial hair is one of those little “soul patch” things…

So David Ortiz arrived yesterday, and will be speaking to the media today at some point, but already the crap has started: “I don’t even know why they’re bitching about me talking about contracts. Guys putting up my numbers, they’re making $25, $30 million. I’m not asking for that. I’m asking for half of it. And they’re still bitching about it? (Expletive) them. I’m tired of hearing them talk (expletive) about me when I talk about my contract. Hey, every time I talk about my contract, I earn it, (expletive). So don’t be giving me that (expletive).

Ugh. Just…UGH…What I find interesting is that according to Nick Cardafo of the Globe, David Ortiz and The Sox agreed not to have a discussion about contracts until the current one was up. Oh well, so much for that…

And then there is Jon Lester, who is taking a more laid back approach to the whole contract thing: “We haven’t sat down. I think there’s going to be a time and a place for that. But that’s not really something I’m concerned about right now. I need to worry about getting for the season physically…I’m not going to go back on what I said (his willingness to sign for less to stay with the Sox). I said what I said from the heart and I mean it. We’ll see where it goes from there. We’ve still got a long way to go. It’s going to be a tough process.”

And then there is Shane Victorino, who was asked about the possibility of hitting lead-off this year: “I never say where I want to be. I don’t care where I hit. I’ve said that all along. Whatever opportunity presents itself, I’m ready for it, whether it be leadoff, whether it be down in the lineup. I’m not really focused on all that. It’s all about getting myself prepared. Wherever I’m put in the batting order, I’ll be ready to go.” How refreshing. And honestly, I never understood the whole batting order conundrum. The only time it truly matters is the first time through. So if someone would like to explain, that would be great.

We may be seeing more of Ryan Lavarnway this year, but not as a catcher. The Sox have been working with him at first base, in an attempt to increase his versatility. John Farrell expects he will see some time there during Spring Training…

Coming up: The first games of Spring Training are next Thursday the 27th, starting at 1:05pm with Northeastern, and then the night contest with Boston College…
