    Red Sox 0, Oakland 13:
    Invoking the Mercy Rule…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:56 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (6)

When my stepdaughter played baseball, they had the mercy rule, where if you were ahead by 10 runs after 4 innings (or middle of the 3rd if you were the home team) the game would be called, so that the other team would not suffer further humiliation. Of course, this is little league, not major league.

But Holy Buckets, last night was certainly the night for the Sox needing a mercy rule–getting slaughtered by Oakland, and fracking Bartolo Colon of all people! So because of the rain, the game was ended in the 7th inning–and I think it’s safe to say they wouldn’t have been coming back from a 13 run deficit…

Someone asked me what happened last night–and it can best be summed up as: Aceves and a knuckleballer…’Nuff said…

Let’s not forget the GEM Of a 3rd inning where Aceves gave up SIX RUNS, without a homer. Nope, that amazing feat was completed by giving up 3 hits and 3 walks a throwing error–and 2, count ‘em TWO balks–Holy Hell, who DOES that?Their lines:

Aceves went 3 and a 1/3 innings, giving up 8 runs (7 earned) on 7 hits (including a homer) while walking 4, and striking out 3, leaving him with an 8.66 ERA…

Stephen Wright (in his major league debut) went 3 and a 2/3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 6 hits while walking and striking out 4–for a nifty 12.27 ERA–Yikes, not a great way to start your MLB career…He was optioned back to Pawtucket after the game, with Daniel Bard taking his place on the roster…Yes, DANIEL Bard..

And the absolute WORST part of Aceves (and honestly, there are so many, its hard to choose) is what an asshat he is–refusing to take responsibility for his suckage, blaming the umpires, the weather, the lack of hitting, etc etc…WHAT a tool…

I think John Farrell says it best: “There seemed to be a lack of focus given the way Alfredo has pitched this year for us and in particular his last outing in Cleveland. It wasn’t a good night.

He needs to go away. NOW.

But, thankfully, it looks like back to the bullpen for dummy head, as John Lackey did VERY well in his rehab outing on Monday, throwing 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, giving up 3 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 5. He threw 67 pitches, 45 for strikes. Next step is a bullpen tomorrow, and then if all goes well, he will start the final game of the homestand against the Astros on Sunday…

And it’s ironic AND sad that I am actually hoping John Lackey comes back this weekend–but he is certainly better than dealing with Aceves–and that is saying something…

Joel Hanrahan pitched off a mound for the first time in over a week, and is not feeling any effects of his strained right hamstring. Another bullpen session will happen this week, and if all goes well, a rehab assignment this weekend. He could possibly be activated on the 29th, the first day be can be, but the team is choosing to be conservative with their closer–which may not be a bad thing, since it’s the beginning of the season, and the Sox are in first place–and Andrew Bailey is filling in admirably in the role…No need to rush Hanrahan back…

Speaking of Andrew Bailey, he and Mike Napoli were selected as the AL Co-players of the week for last week. Helping the Sox to a 5-2 record for the week, it’s the first time each has earned the honor, and the 3rd time 2 Red Sox players have shared award…

And let me just say that Josh Reddick was MUCH less scary than he is now..He’s like the fracking unibomber these days…Holy Hell..

Coming up: The rubber match between the Sox and Oakland this afternoon, Jon Lester goes for his 4th win of the 2013 campaign, and hopefully can do what and aces should do: Stop the Skid. He is opposed by Brett Anderson. 1st pitch 4:05pm…
