Red Sox 4, Puerto Rico 3:
    A NON-sucking John Lackey???

    Holy Buckets!

OK, I know 3 innings in Spring Training is a minuscule sample size, but holy hell, 3 innings of 3 hit ball with 2 strikeouts? 45 pitches, 31 for strikes? From John Lackey? Has that even happened is recent memory?

And how fracked up is it that a pitcher can get blown save AND the win? Well, Clayton Mortensen did it yesterday, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits while walking and striking out 1 each. I don’t think they should be allowed to have the win after they screw up…Nope….

The rest of the bullpen combined for 3 innings of 2 hit ball with 2 strikeouts, courtesy of Andrew Bailey, whom I WISH would give us something more than FLASHES of brilliance…

Big Papi ran for a 2nd day in a row yesterday, and apparently, the soreness is lessening every time he goes out there. The end of this week for some grapefruit action is still the goal…

And some super sad new: Ryan Westmoreland, the prospect who showed so much potential before being felled by a “cavernous malformation” in his brain in 2010, has retired from baseball. After his initial surgery 3 years ago, it looked like he might defy all the odds and make it back to baseball, but a setback necessitating another surgery last year pretty much ended his bid for the bigs. From his statement: “With a clear mind and heart, as well as the unwavering support and friendship of my family, friends, agent(s), doctors, therapists and the Boston Red Sox, I have decided to voluntarily retire as a professional baseball player..Although it is a very difficult decision for me, it has become clear that the neurological damage caused by the most recent cavernous malformation and surgery leaves me with physical challenges that make it impossible to play the game at such a high level.”

Minor Leaguer Drank Britton was arrested for DUI, speeding, and reckless driving (among other things) over the weekend. Britton, who was optioned to AA Portland on Monday, was scheduled to pitch in the Skankee game on Sunday, but then was a scratch. John Farrell weighs in on the incident: “We take every situation like that seriously. In this case with Drake, it’s still being addressed; we’re still gathering information and the facts of what transpired. Fortunately in this case there was no one injured. But bottom line it’s a very serious issue with us.”

Ya know, there are SO many things that need to happen JUST RIGHT for someone to get their shot at the bigs–but when you shoot yourself in the foot by being stupid and irresponsible–that is just SUCH a waste…especially when you have immensely talented players like Ryan Westmoreland, who through NO FAULT OF HIS OWN, will not have that chance…

Not So Neato Stat: According to Baseball Prospectus (LINK) the Sox lost 1,587 man games due to injury last year. That’s nearly TEN YEARS of games! And we wonder why there was A LOT of suckage last year…

Finally, a huge congratulations to fellow BBA-er William Tasker over at The Flagrant Fan, who hit his TEN YEAR blogging milestone yesterday. In addition, he hit the oh-so impressive 3000th post mark earlier this week, which is an estimated 2.1 MILLION words. Holy Buckets!

Coming up: Look for Daniel Bard to make another Grapefruit appearance (his first since February 25th) in tomorrow’s game vs the Twins. He has been doing ok so far in non game action. If they can get him back to where he was before 2012, he would definitely be a HUGE boost to an already very good bullpen. That Clay Person gets his 2nd start, opposed by Kevin Correia for the Twins. 1st pitch: 1:05pm
