    January 17, 2013:
    Day 45 and Done…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:59 pm in General No Comments

    Took them long enough…

We all know by now that, due to the concerns about Mike Napoli’s hip, the Sox have backed away from the original 3 year, $39 million offer they agree upon, pending a physical, back on December 3rd. Now, they signed him to a one year deal–for $5 million. Can’t imagine that is going to give him the warm fuzzies. Wonderful, we now get a (probably) resentful 1st baseman. Ducky…

So, Terry Francona’s book comes out next Tuesday (already have it pre-ordered, natch), and already the brouhaha is starting… And I was surprised that Tom Werner was chosen to speak for ownership–usually he is the quiet one. I thought it would be King Larry, getting all pissy…But here is what Tom had to say: “We had unbelievable success together for many years, and now our focus is on 2013.” And of course, John Henry had nothing to say, which seems to be his thing these days–feels like apathy to me…

And again, I will ask the question: Shaughnessy? Really? But despite that, I cannot WAIT to read it–I expect it will be vintage Tito: Witty, honest and classy…

Thankfully, Vincente Padilla will not be resigned by the Boston Red Sox, as he has signed a 1-year, $3.25 million deal with the SoftBank Hawks in Japan. I know he has some success with the Sox (in 56 outings from the bullpen, 4-1, with a 4.50 ERA) but he always seem to melt down when the Sox needed him most…and the whole “had 10 kids (!) And has been in trouble with the law for not supporting his progeny” is more than a little distasteful. And as an added bonus, we won’t have to listen to Mark Toxemia whine about Padilla (although I can guarantee he’ll whine about something else…)

In other good news, Aaron Cook has signed with the Phillies to a minor league contract. If he makes the bigs, he would get $1.6 million. The Phillies money couldn’t be safer if it was in For Knox…

It’s arbitration time again! Otherwise known as “Can Ben Keep the 10 year streak going?” This year’s contestants include: Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Bailey, Daniel Bard, Craig Breslow, Jacoby Ellsbury, Joel Hanrahan, Andrew Miller, Franklin Morales, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, all who filed for arbitration on Tuesday. The player and the Sox each have to provide a number by Friday, with the hearings beginning Feb 1…

Finally, Stadium Journey Magazine has just released its list of the Top 101 Stadium Experiences for 2012. After visiting 1,225 different stadiums (Holy Buckets!), Fenway Park came in at #2 on the list overall, and #1 in baseball. In case you were wondering who is #1 overall? Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts…There is also a very in-depth and great review of our beloved Fenway, rating everything from food to accessibility, Extras (of which there are MANY) You can read all about it here. Check it out!

Coming up: Less than 4 weeks to Pitchers and Catchers (26 Days!) and a little more than 12 weeks to Opening Day.

BUT, Red Sox Tickets go on Sale next Saturday the 26th, starting at 10:00am–so I will sit down in front of my computer, with my coffee and my daughter, and try to get tickets to the Holy Land for the 2013 campaign. I wonder if they will be as hard to get, since they were so abysmal last year. Oh, and can we knock it off with the “sold out record” already? It may be the case on paper, but no one is buying that its reality anymore…
