    January 7, 2012:
    The 2013 Schedule

Posted by Christine E. at 7:59 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (3)

As always, the Red Sox baseball schedule is a sight to behold. It’s the concrete, clear-cut evidence that there WILL Be Red Sox baseball very soon–even if some of the scheduling leaves something to be desired…

19 meetings between the Red Sox and the Skanks this year, with the extra game being played at the Stadium. Thankfully, the Sox do not end their season playing them, as they did last year, but they will begin the season in New York with a day game on April 1st, then 2 night games on the 3rd and 4th. Then nothing until the last day of May, where the Sox return to NYC for 3–so that means the 1st 3rd of the 19 are being held at the Stadium, with the Sox not hosting the Skanks at Fenway until AFTER the All-Star Break–the 3 games immediately following, as a matter of fact.

And of course, 5 of their contests are on Sunday, with 4 of them being TBA–and the 5th being what we know the 4 TBA’s will be: ESPN 8:00 games. I wonder who will call the games, now that Tito’s in Cleveland, and Bobby V took a job with NBC Sports Radio…No matter who it is, I bet they will wear a pin striped suit…

Speaking of pin stripes. The Sox get to kick off the season with both Derek Lowe AND Kevin Youkilis wearing the uniform of the Evil Empire. Ducky.

The Sox start the Fenway season off with 3 against Baltimore a week later, with an afternoon game on Monday the 8th, followed by their 2nd day off of the season, and then 2 night games against the cookies…

Patriot’s day is against Tampa Bay again this year, at 11:05 am in the 15th of April…

10 middle of the night games on the left coast, including a 10 game swing to visit the Angels, Seattle, and Oakland right before the All-Star game (7 of those are 9:05 or later). Then there are the 6 games in August–3 against San Fran, 2 of which start at the impossibly late hour of 10:15(!) and 3 against the Dodgers, including a Sunday TBA

A prime example of the chicken or the egg. Did the Sox get matched with LA before, or AFTER they mega-deal which sent Beckett, Gonzales, and Crawford out west? ‘Cause you KNOW that is going to be THE STORY for the month of August. What ever…

In interleague play, the Sox face the Phillies (as always) but with a twist–all of the games are during the week, starting with a weird 2 game series at the Fens, and then both teams hop on the planes and trains, and head to Philly for 2.

As part of interleague play, the Sox also face the Padres, and Arizona, in addition to the Giants and the Dodgers…And, oddly enough, they have 2 games with the Rockies at the end of June, and then 2 games against then in SEPTEMBER for the penultimate series of the 2013 campaign.  Talk about spreading this interleague play thing out, although I suspect this is more of a result of the fact that the Astros are now an AL team, so its unbalanced, so someone from each league is always playing each other.  And we though the 15-20 games a year we were forced to endure were bad…

No October regular season games this year, with the Sox season ending again on the road on Sunday the 29th with an afternoon game against the Oreos.

And, in case you were wondering: While the Sox will face Terry Francona and the Indians on April 16th for 3–Tito doesn’t return to the Fens untiil May 23rd.

Coming up: 36 Days to Pitchers and Catchers first formal workout…and 84 Days to Opening Day!
