    January 3, 2013:
    Around the Horn…

    Posted by Christine E. at 7:12 pm in Baseball,Old Friends,Random Thoughts,Red Sox,Signings and Trades Comments (2)

Some random Red Thoughts, as I try to wrap my head around the fact that the Sox could have had Cody Ross (who signed a 3-year $26 million deal with the Diamondbacks) for 2/3’s  of what paid for Shane Victorino…

Speaking of my beloved Cody Ross, interesting info on Bobby Valentine: “When Bobby came in his way of doing things was a lot different than what they were used to under Terry Francona and it was a shock to them. They weren’t on board with it. For me, I’d played for four or five managers and for me it was ‘OK, this is the way he does things.’ We never butted heads. I had a good relationship with Bobby…” And, at least he isn’t playing for the Skanks…

R.A. Dickey, who won 20 games for the Mets and the 2012 NL Cy Young Award, was also named New York Sportsman of the Year. Stand up guy, got a lot of great PR for the hapless Mets, and how do they thank him? By sending out their team’s electronic greeting card, featuring season highlights–and not one mention of probably their best player this year. NADA. Guess it’s not surprising, as we ARE talking about the Wilpons…

And how does R.A. respond? Exactly how you would expect him to. With class and dignity. Check out his farewell to the Mets

I reallyREALLY wish the Sox had went after him…

Speaking of going after–The Sox pulled the trigger and got themselves a closer for Christmas, trading Mark Melancon (and his 895.25 ERA), Stolmy Pimentel and 2 other minor leaguers to the Pirates for right handed closer Joel Hanrahan, and infielder Brock Holt. And there was no hemming and hawing and saying that there would be a competition in Spring Training, and that Andrew Bailey would have a chance to compete. Nope, John Farrell said Hanrahan is the new closer. Done.

The 31-year old, 2-Time All-Star has had 76 saves in the last 2 seasons, with a 2.72 ERA for 2012–and a 1.83 ERA in 2011. Let’s hope the transition from the NL isn’t too jarring–and that he stays healthy…

Tito’s book: Francona, The Red Sox Years comes out January 22nd byImage the way. Yep, already pre-ordered it from Amazon. But I am completely flummoxed as to WHY he would have chosen Shaughnessy to co-write his book.

And, my step daughter got me Tim Wakefield’s new book: Knuckler, that, as soon as I finish Dr. Andrew’s new book, I cannot wait to get into…At least Tim has the good sense to have Mazz co-write his…

Interesting tidbit: Shortstop Stephen Drew will wear his brother’s # 7 as a member of the Red Sox, which was also Trot Nixon’s Number, and my beloved Cody Ross (sniff)

Finally, fellow BBA‘er Graham Womack over at Baseball Past and Present released his third iteration of The 50 best baseball players not in the Hall of Fame. With the glut of talent (controversial and otherwise) on the ballot this year, it makes for some thought-provoking reading. Check it out!

Coming up: The BBWAA announces the 2013 Hall of Fame Class next week, and the BBA will announce theirs a few days earlier…

Oh, and we are 40 days to Pitchers and Catchers. Perhaps the Mike Napoli contract will be resolved by then…It’s a month today the announcement was made that he was signed, pending a physical…
