    December 20, 2012:
Welcome to the Ryan Dempster Era…

Donning #46, Ryan Dempster had his presser at Fenway yesterday, saying he was excited to play for the Sox, and called Kevin Millar a “legend” Oh, OK–guess I am glad he has a sense of humor, or is completely delusional…

But his biggest plus is the fact that he is a horse, and will go out there and give the Red Sox 200 innings a year, which is something they desperately need…AND he credits Greg Maddux as a giant influence on his pitching–which means, of course, we need to link to the GREATEST.COMMERCIAL.EVER.

I do like this signing–he was a very good pitcher in the NL, and I am hoping the time he spent with the Rangers the 2nd half of last year will help ease the transition to the AL…

To make room for him on the 40-man, Pedro Beato has been DFA’ed. You remember him (or maybe not), the unknown pitcher Sox got him from the Mets for giving away Kelly Shoppach…

So, as it stands, it looks like the rotation for the 2013 campaign will be Lester, Buchholz, Lackey (ugh) Dempster and either Felix Doubront or Franklin Morales, although it will probably be Doubront…Is that a rotation that can right the ship? Not really sure–there are still too many variables. Will Jon Lester return to his dominance, now that John Farrell is back? Will Buchholz stay healthy? Will John Lackey stop being an idiot and be a better pitcher than he was? I think a lot of things need to go right for this to happen…

The Sox worked to bolster the bullpen, signing 38 year old Japanese righty Koji Uehara to a 1-year, $4.25 million deal. He weighs in: “I am really grateful for the Boston Red Sox expressing the strong desire to acquire me and giving this new opportunity. Now it’s my responsibility to meet their expectation and to give my best performance without getting injured.”

According to Ben, my beloved Cody Ross could still be a possibility for the Red Sox: “We have not closed the door by any means. I have not had a conversation recently with him, but no, we have not closed the door.” Please Ben, make a girl happy, and make it happen…

Speaking of making a girl happy, here’s a horrific thought: If the contract talks with Mike Napoli fall through, Nick Swisher is a very real possibility for first base. He is currently visiting teams, but fortunately, the Sox are not currently one of them…

Finally, Kevin Youkilis had some good things to say with regard to his signing as a Skankee–personally, knowing that he didn’t do it as a giant “#*&@^#*&@^ you” to the Sox and the Nation, helps immensely: “Nothing was out of spite in this decision. People are going to take it however they want, but it was not like that. There was another team that was in the same division. No matter what, it could have gone that way, too, playing against the Red Sox. The whole thing, it was just I really thought this was the best opportunity to win. With what I was presented and different things, it wasn’t anything out of spite.”

Coming up: Ben continued to try and sign Mike Napoli, but you have to think that the longer it takes, the less likely it will be that it’ll happen…the alternative is too awful to contemplate…

Well, if the world ends tomorrow, guess it won’t matter either
