Review: Fenway Park: Home of the
Boston Red Sox 100th Anniversary Collectors Set
For a hundred years she’s stood here,
Heard cheering, seen our tears.
Through all the good times and the bad
Fenway perseveres.
She’s baseball’s great crown jewel,
A treasure — this is why.
Look out there on her field, you’ll see
The ghosts of games gone by.
And so begins Disc #1 of the 100th Anniversary Collectors Set, with the Documentary, Fenway Park: 100 Years as the Heart of Red Sox Nation, and the beautiful and haunting poem Long Live Fenway Park (you can read the whole thing here) by the official Poet Laureate of Fenway Park, Dick Flavin.
If there ever was a Collectors Set worthy of the name, it would be this one. 12 DVD’s, with over 26 hours of Fenway Park and the Boston Red Sox.
A number of things we have seen before: The 2004 and 2007 World Series Films, The 1999 All-Star Game, Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS and “THE Steal”, as well as memories from some of the biggest games in Red Sox history.
It was lovely to revisit all the wonderful memories again. My heart still pounds when Dave Roberts steals 2nd in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS (I am always fearful that somehow, he won’t make it this time), and I still get angry when I see Ted Williams WITHOUT a Red Sox Hat at the 1999 All-Star Game, opting to wear that ridiculous “Hitters.net” advertisements that his opportunistic son, John, had him to wear…And I cheer when one of my favorite Red Sox players of all time, (and the only “Pudge” as far as I am concerned), Carlton Fisk willed that home run fair in 1975…
But this collection doesn’t stop there. Also included is rare footage from the 50′s through the 80′s, as well as highlights from the 90′s and the 00′s…
All of this, packed in some jewel cases in a box, would be a welcome addition to any Red Sox fan’s DVD collection. But this 12 disc set is packaged in a gorgeous 28 page book, which begins with blueprints of Fenway on the inside covers, and continues with breathtaking pictures, and a narrative which includes such topics as Red Sox MVP’s, Arms, Quirks, and Grand Opening, among others…
Available from A & E Home Video through the Red Sox Shop, Fenway Park: Home of the Boston Red Sox 100th Anniversary Collectors Set is a stunning collection of must have items for any Red Sox fan–and would make the absolutely perfect Christmas gift.
Check it out!
