Red Sox 2, Tampa Bay 4:
The All Fenway Team – The Results Show…
Since the 2012 version of the Old Towne Team couldn’t even scratch out a win on their final homestand, and now share the worst season Home Record with their 1965 counterparts, I don’t really want to go there.
And honestly, do we really want to talk about Bobby Valentine’s pathetic bravado about being around next year?
Not even a little…
So, let’s talk about the pre-show: The “All-Fenway Team”
Back in February, I wrote some posts, Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, listing my selections for the best squad of all time. Fans and Historians were able to vote all season long, in 2 week increments for each position, making a selection from a list of nominees. According to the Red Sox, more than 120 votes were received–thankfully, they didn’t do the dumb “25 votes per e-mail addy” that MLB does for the All-Star Game to falsely inflate the numbers…
So let’s look back and compare how I did, compared to how the Nation as a whole voted…

Out of the 15 slots, I matched up with the Nation 10 times–or 2/3 of the time. I wasn’t aware that I should have selected a 2nd bench guy, although I probably would have went with Cabo as well…
The Red Sox also released First and Second Reserves, which is where the rest of mine fell, 3 out of 4 in the 1st, and Tony Conigliaro in the 2nd…
And it’s interesting to note that only the Starting Lineup contained a DH and a Bench but none were listed in the reserves…
First Reserves:
Catcher: Jason Varitek
1B: Mo Vaughn
2B: Bobby Doerr
3B: Mike Lowell
SS: Johnny Pesky
LF: Carl Yastrzemski
CF: Dom DiMaggio
RF: Trot Nixon
Pitcher: Roger Clemens
Pitcher: Tim Wakefield
Pitcher: Dennis Eckersley
Pitcher: Dick Radatz
Manager: Joe Cronin
Second Reserves:
Catcher: Rich Gedman
1B: George Scott
2B: Jerry Remy
3B: Frank Malzone
SS: Rico Petrocelli
LF: Jim Rice
CF: Reggie Smith
RF: Tony Conigliaro
Pitcher: Babe Ruth
Pitcher: Smoky Joe Wood
Pitcher: Curt Schilling
Pitcher: Bill Lee
Pitcher: Jim Lonborg
Manager: Dick Williams
And quite of few of the players returned for the honor, although I think seeing Fatboy Roger 2 days in a row is a bit much. And notice how he has nothing but love for Boston now? When he was in the “twilight of his career”, the emphasis was more on the “nuthin”, rather than the love–why change now? UGH…
A Neato Stat to end this god-awful season: Last night’s game was the 8,000th Major League game played at Fenway Park, which also includes games played by the Boston Braves back in the day…
Finally, do you think the Sox had this kind of season in mind for their 100th year at Fenway Park? I’m thinking not…Honestly, you can’t make this sh*t up…If you had told any of us that this season would be the 6-month version of last September’s epic collapse, we would have thought that wasn’t possible…Because it REALLY couldn’t happen, right?
Coming up: The Sox second day off in 5, then they head on the road for their final 5 games – 2 against the Oreos, and 3 against the Skanks. Kicking off the 2-game series against the Cookies, Aaron Cook goes for his 11th loss of the season–I know I could say his 5th win–but that is MUCH less likely. The Cookies have not announced their pitcher yet–I hear it may be the 6 year old daughter of one of the players. Hell, against Aaron Cook, my money is on the kid…1st pitch: 7:05
