    Red Sox 7, Marlins 5:
    Welcome Back Cody Ross…

Posted by Christine E. at 4:10 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

It’s no secret that Cody Ross is my new favorite player. I liked him back when he played with the Giants–he knows how to play the game right, and, like one of my previous favorites, Mike Lowell, always seems to be right there when good things happen. That’s why I was so happy when the Sox signed him over the winter–I actually think that was probably the best signing Ben made during the last off-season…

And then after being on the DL for exactly a month with a fractured left foot, he returns and contributes immediately, with a solo shot in his 2nd at bat.

And of course, one step forward, one step back, as Cody replaced Scott Podsednik who went on the DL with a mild groin strain. Apparently, he really doesn’t need a full 15 days, more like a week, but the Sox wanted to play it conservatively, and didn’t want to play “short” for that span…I personally don’t think that playing it conservatively when you have players dropping like flies, is the way to go but…

So apparently, Josh Beckett won’t need more than a 2 week vacation, er, DL Stint to recover from his shoulder inflammation. An MRI on Monday revealed no structural damage. As his stint is retroactive to June 12th, he can come off the DL later next week. And what is interesting to note is that, according to Beckett, he wanted to keep pitching through, and then take a break around the All-Star break, but was “overruled”. Huh. Sorry, Josh, after your crappy behavior for, oh, the last YEAR or so, don’t really put much stock in the things you say…

There has been a TON of brouhaha about Buster Olney’s “The Toxic Red Sox Clubhouse” Blog post. Like most things in life, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, and like most things in life, winning is a great equalizer…But again, I am not totally buying THIS statement from Josh Beckett: “…I think this is probably one of the tightest-knit groups I’ve ever been a part of, with dinners on the road, a couple family trips here this last time. We do a lot of stuff together. There’s a good continuity here…” And I guess the 2007 group were just a bunch of malcontents…Again; I just cannot buy into the Josh Beckett comment parade. CANNOT.

In some good news, Jacoby Ellsbury took batting practice at Fenway yesterday, and is probably only a few weeks away from a minor league assignment. If they can get Jake back before the hole gets any deeper, it could be a HUGE boost to this ballclub…

Carl Crawford, who has yet to play a game this season, is a little further along, and will probably start a rehab assignment sometime next week. And then in his first game, he will make a throw and his torso will fall off…

But what I am reallyREALLY concerned about is Dustin Pedroia’s thumb. I said a couple of weeks ago (and I am not the only one) who thought that it wasn’t the greatest idea in the world for Dustin to play through this injury, and after his leaving the game after getting his thumb jammed in his 7th inning at bat, I am even more concerned…But apparently, all is well. He will take tonight off, but is available to pinch hit, with Nick Punto manning 2nd for tonight’s contest…

Coming up: Felix Doubront, going for his 8th win of the season, will take the mound in game 2 of the Marlins series. He is opposed by Ricky Nolasco. 1st pitch 7:10pm…
