Red Sox 6, Oreos 8, in 10 Innings:
    19th Bullpen Meltdown…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:47 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Holy Buckets! I JUST said the other day that since Scott Atchison had such a brilliant streak (19 2/3 innings) of scoreless ball going, he was due to get lit up for, like 9 runs.

Well, it was only 2, but they were as a result of Matt Albers allowing the inherited runners to score. BUT, Atchison also contributed to it, as HE allowed Jon Lester’s final run to score…Yeah, it doesn’t make a ton of sense to me either…

And then there was Aceves, who was on the hook for the loss (his 3rd of the season), giving up the 2 runs in the 10th inning that ruined Saltalamacchia’s 2 run shot with 2 outs in the 9th to be for naught…)

But this game was a crazy cluster even before that. A rare error by Mike Aviles in the allowed 2 unearned runs in the 3rd inning. And while it was a competent outing for Lester, it just seems like he is always battling; it’s never easy…

His line: 6+ innings, throwing 99 pitches (63 for strikes) giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 5…

The All-Star game is a little more than a month away, and David Ortiz is the leading vote getter amongst DH’s, as of this week. Dustin Pedroia is #3 among 2nd basemen, after the Rangers Ian Kinsler, and Robinson Cano. As always, you can vote up to 25 times per e-mail address here. Haven’t gotten to mine yet, but I will. Unfortunately, a bunch of the players who are actually PLAYING for the Sox aren’t on the ballot…

Speaking of Pedroia, as promised, he was back in the lineup for last night’s contest. Equipped with a special brace to keep his thumb and accompanying muscles in place, he played 2nd, and went 0-3 with 2 strikeouts, a walk, and a sac fly…

And Daniel Bard was sent to Pawtucket to work out his issues there–GOOD. Apparently, he said he could work things out in the bigs. Sure, Daniel, the Sox will just give you the ball every 5th day, and you can get lit up, and tax the bullpen, while you figure out what the hell is wrong with you. Uh Uh…His next start was to be Saturday against the Nationals. His replacement is TBA, but the front runner is the return of Daisuke, although they may hold off, as he pitched last night, and that would allow him only 3 days rest–even tho he only pitched 1 1/3 innings…

Daniel’s roster spot went to newly activated Darnell McDonald, who had been rehabbing his trained oblique. He did not play last night…

How’s THIS for a neato (if slightly unbelievable) stat? Since April 23rd, the Sox had the best record in the AL with 24-17…

And this stat is just sad: The Sox 2 “Aces” STILL do not have win records Lester is 3-4 and Beckett is 4-5. The 2 pitchers who DO have winning records? That Clay Person (due to GREAT run support, as evidenced by his 6.58 ERA) 5-2, and the winningest of all: Felix Doubront, who holds a 6-2 record for the 2012 campaign…

Coming up: Josh Beckett gets the start in game 2 of the series, opposed by Wei-Yin Chen. Let’s hope the “I actually give a crap” Josh Beckett shows up tonight–cause I reallyREALLY hate losing to the crapping Cookies. 1st pitch 7:10pm
