    Red Sox 8, Twins 3:
    A Game with a Score!

Posted by Christine E. at 7:18 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Holy Buckets! An ACTUAL score! While Grapefruit League is completely meaningless, it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Meaningless games with scores, then Actual REAL LIVE games with Scores–only 31 days to go!

So, right now the Sox are 3-0, having beaten the snot (25-0, 15-0) out of the college teams (no surprise there) and handily beating the Twins in game 1 of their Mayor’s Cup battle, thanks to a grand slam by Lars Anderson in the 7th inning.

Josh Beckett pitched well in his 2 innings of work, giving up 1 hit while walking 2, and throwing 36 pitches. And Andrew Miller looked a lot better than he did last year, throwing 2 scoreless innings, while striking out 3…

So, now there will be TWO Wild Card teams in each League, which means 10 teams (a full THIRD of baseball) will get to the dance, even if it’s just for 1 day. The 2 Wild Card teams will play a 1 game sudden death contest to see who advances to the Division Series…

That means that the Sox would have made it to the postseason in both 2010 AND 2011. And I am not entirely sure how I feel about that. Last year’s play in September certainly did not make them postseason worthy. And if there was another game, who exactly would have started it? It would have been the same predicament they would have had last year if the Sox had won and Tampa Bay had lost on September 28th…Would the outcome have been any different?

While this will probably be the best chance the Sox will have to get the Postseason for the 2012 Campaign (Optimistic, aren’t I?) I still think it’s akin to the “prizes for everyone! Everyone is a winner!” mentality that seems to be prevalent in society today…

And I think I can speak for a number of people when I ask: “Why did they wait so long to make this announcement?” It’s not like they decided last weekend. They had to have talked this to death, and ran it buy everyone and their 2nd cousin to make sure everyone was OK with it…Honestly, sometimes I think MLB could mess up a one-car funeral…

Coming up: The 1st night game of the season for the Sox (and the only one for the Twins) as the face off again tonight. The Sox and the Twins will face each other 6 times during spring training, vying for the Mayor’s Cup, which was won by the Twins last year. Clay Buchholz takes the mound tonight, opposed by Jason Marquis. 1st pitch 7:05pm…
