    February 27, 2012:
    Baseball is Upon Us!

Posted by Christine E. at 5:09 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Despite the fact that the Northeast is gearing up for some kind of mixture of snow, sleet, rain, etc that the weather folks feel will impact travel later this week, baseball is still happening in beautiful sunny Florida…

The Sox have been working, and had their first full squad workout today…Our wait is almost over.

Remember when we all questioned Jacoby’s commitment? C’mon, admit it, even if you didn’t come right out and say it–the thought did cross your mind… Holy Buckets, what a difference a year makes. Not only did be COMPLETELY bounce back from the abysmal “I could only play 18 games, because my ribs kept breaking” of 2010, with an exceptional 2011–2nd place in MVP voting, only losing to a PITCHER, for heaven’s sake. But he comes to camp, and says all the right things–Doesn’t care where he hits, loves Boston, the fans, etc etc. This coming from one of the BEST player in baseball last year–the guy who really has nothing to prove anymore…

Of course, it IS troubling that if he keeps up this way, the Sox would have to pay a gajillion and 15 dollars to keep him when he hits free agency after the 2013 campaign–he is a Satan client after all–but for now, let’s enjoy while we can…

    And then….

There is Carl Crawford, who the Sox are paying a gazillion and 15 dollars, and played horribly last year. And instead of saying all the right things, he is full of excuses. John Henry doesn’t like him, and hitting 7th in the batting order made him lose face with players on other teams, yada, yada yada…

But apparently, John Henry and he sat down, and John apologized for his comments–and apparently, Carl apologized for his crappy play in 2011. I’m sorry, but this is SO very lame…Have any of you ever had a boss that called you into their office and apologized for something? Or better yet, have you ever gone public WHINING about how your boss said something?

Grow the frig up Carl. But I will say this–If Bobby V hits you in a spot that doesn’t bruise your ego, you had better hit .350 this year, since all of your excuses will be GONE…

We always knew that he was holding something back in terms of how he felt about Manny Ramirez–Terry Francona is a team player, a good manager, not one to publically humiliate his players, or call them out in public. But I don’t think we EVER knew the extent of Tito’s dislike of Manny until this quote came out this week, something he once said to Peter Gammons: “Manny Ramirez is the worst human being I’ve ever met.” Wow. No equivocating there…

Speaking of no equivocating: There will be no alcohol in the clubhouses at Fenway Park this year, with Bobby Valentine dropping that bomb during yesterday’s meeting. Not super surprising, and he is what he has to say on the decision: “The rules are not to embarrass themselves or the team, the community, their teammates. I don’t think that’s a new rule. That’s a longstanding rule of life.”

More stuff is coming out about Ryan Braun beating the rap on his 50 day suspension for testing positive for a banned substance: He won because of a technicality. Apparently, his sample was mishandled. And, if you watch as much “Law and Order” as I do, you know that when the chain of custody is broken, it creates a TON of reasonable doubt. And reasonable doubt has allowed A LOT of criminals go free…So is he innocent, a victim of bad lab practices, or just very very lucky?

Finally, Baseball Tickets Online asked for some preseason thoughts on the Red Sox. And we all know how great I am at making predictions, (heh) but you can check out my thoughts here:

Coming up: FIVE days until the Sox play their very first baseball games of 2012–Holy Buckets! After all this waiting, it’s hard to believe the season is almost here….
