    February 14, 2012:
    Dodging the bullet…

Posted by Christine E. at 6:25 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

While the Sox did not get as close as they did when negotiating with Wily Mo in 2007 (They hammered out a deal while they were waiting to go into the hearing), the Sox got pretty close to what could have been a complete and utter mess with David Ortiz…or at least a distraction and a big-time ego bruising…

So the Sox met in the middle, agreeing to 1-year $14.575 million contract with the Large Father…Whew! And, according to his agent, Ortiz is very happy the deal got done before the hearing…

So the current Sox ownership’s record of never having an arbitration hearing is still intact–a perfect 9 for 9…

As part of the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, the Sox will be unveiling an “All Fenway Team” around the All-Star break, with balloting to be done by the Sox and FenwayPark100.com. So, over the next few months, fans will be able to vote for different player categories, starting with best starters, both right and left handers. There will also be a “10th Man” category, which is similar to what MLB does for the All-Star game. The 2nd place players in each category will fall into this group, with the fans voting for the top 5…

So as not to be all over the place, there are predetermined selections in each category, which is fine, but the one that jumps out at me and slaps me RIGHT in the face is JD Drew in the Right Field category! Just Dangling? REALLY? Of the dozens of players to man right field, JD is the best you could come up with? Especially when he is placed next this esteemed group: Tony Conigliaro, Dwight Evans, Harry Hooper, Jackie Jensen and Trot Nixon…

I’ll be doing my selections at some point–although in some of these categories it’s going to be tough to choose…

Hey! Guess what? The Commissioners’ Office is expected to render a decision this week about the Theo compensation issue. Will I be the only one who isn’t shocked if this doesn’t actually happen?

Coming up: As we inch closer to Pitchers and Catchers, a Nation waits to see which Josh Beckett comes to camp–the “best shape of this life” Josh Beckett, or the “32 tons of fun” Josh Beckett…Personally, I think he’ll be somewhere in the middle…
