    January 10, 2012:
    The 2012 Campaign…

Posted by Christine E. at 7:54 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

So the 2012 Red Sox Schedule has been out for a while, and I had a chance to really look at it yesterday. And the overwhelming theme for me is: Weirdness…

First of all, I guess the Sox have now completely done away with the traditional 7:05 start time, opting for a 7:10 start time for night games in the Fens. Now what am I supposed to do with the T-shirt I bought in Cooperstown a couple of years ago that says “Is it 7:05 yet?”. Thanks so much for that Sox/NESN…

Not sure why teams have different start times–although I am sure it has something to do with TV stuff. Toronto’s games start at 7 minutes after the hour, maybe that is a Canadian thing, as no one else does that–and it seems like more and more teams are moving to the 10 after the hour start…

I am looking at the schedule and I see “MIA” for 3 days at Fenway the 2nd week in June, and 3 days somewhere else, the 3rd week in June and I am wracking my brain, trying to figure out who the hell “MIA” is–and then I remembered than the Marlins are no longer the “Florida Marlins”, but the “Miami Marlins” sounds kinda like a basketball team to me…But with a cranky Hanley Ramirez, and a ballistic Carlo Zambrano, they will certainly be interesting to watch…

This year’s interleague play starts in May with a weekend in Philly (18-20) and ends with the Braves coming to Fenway the Weekend of June 22-23. During the Span, the Sox play the Nationals, the Cubbies (will Theo get booed?) and the Marlins as I mentioned above. Thankfully its only 3 games with a PA team, as I only usually get 1 of them, because of the blackouts…

And, in case you were wondering, The Sox play the Skanks 18 times this year, starting with 3 at Fenway April 20-22. There is a breather until the Sox host again right before the All-Star Break. July and August see 6 games in the Bronx, and then it’s back to Fenway for a midweek 3-game series in September. And then, unfortunately, the Sox will close out their 2012 Campaign with 3 games in the Bronx in October.

And then there is the strange SUNDAY day off on September 30th, before the Sox play their 3 against the Skanks–in addition to the 2 days off the week before. (Monday the 24th and Thursday the 27th) What is up with that? It just feels SO contrived, as they fit the square peg in the round hole, to make sure the Skanks and the Sox play each other in October–in the middle of the week…

The middle of the night games are plentiful in 2012, with 16 games on the left coast this year–There were only EIGHT in 2011. Starting with the end of June/beginning of July (4) after 10pm, (2) after 4, and 1 TBA, and then the end of August through the beginning of September(5) after 10, (1) after 9, (2) after 4, and (1) after 3…Honestly, do the Sox really need to play SEVEN games against Seattle–in Seattle?

The All-Star Break for the Sox is a 4 Day event again this year, with the Sox heading to Tampa Bay for 3 on Friday the 13th…

And there are 7 Sunday TBA’s– 4 against the Skanks, 1 against the Phils, the Cubs, and Cleveland. If I were a betting girl, I would say that the 4 are a given for ESPN, and probably the Cubs–although the media tries to sell us on the whole “natural rival” thing with Philadelphia-which I have never bought into–and I think I can safely say the Sox/Cleveland matchup doesn’t rate high enough…

And the during the week day games seem to have increased–there are 5 of them in April alone (including Patriots Day on April 16th) and 14 total–and every game in the 4 game series against Tampa Bay in April at Fenway is a day game–how weird is that? I know its cold in Boston in April, but I don’t remember ever having an all-day games series…

Coming up: 40 Days to Pitchers and Catchers, 86 to Opening Day, and 94 to the first game at Fenway! Whoo Hoo!
