    November 14, 2011:
Well, THAT sure kicked things off…

Posted by Christine E. at 8:17 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

So, Jonathan Papelbon got the big money deal he wanted: 4 Years, $50 million from the Phillies, who has previous agreed to 4 years, $44 million with their in house reliever Ryan Madson. Apparently the kibosh was put on THAT deal by Phillies President David Montgomery.

And while I am not super heartbroken his leaving, I am a little miffed that, after 7 years with the only team he has ever known, he and his agents couldn’t even trouble themselves to contact the Sox to see if they had a counter offer…But I guess it doesn’t matter anyway–Ben Cherington  went on the record saying they would not have offered him a deal of this magnitude anyway: “We never made an offer, haven’t made an offer to this point. We have had a lot of discussions with Sam and Seth [Levinson, Papelbon’s agents], about the concepts. To this point, it’s been clear that where we see it, what we’d be willing to do at this point in the offseason — given what our other needs are and given what we feel the alternatives are — is not something that matched up with what Pap was looking for.

And there are other closers out there: Ryan Madson, who had the rug pulled out from underneath him by the Phillies; Heath Bell and the trouble making Francisco Rodriguez (who I fervently hope they never EVER consider….)Brad Lidge and Joe Nathan, while a bit older and more beat up, could also be a good fit for the Sox…

And let’s not forget about heir apparent Daniel Bard–one moment he is brilliant, the next, he is giving up 4 runs–and this is what concerns me about him being the 9th inning guy. And I am not entirely sure he isn’t more suited to being a starter, than a closer…Although Ben seems to love him: “Daniel is one of the most prepared and conscientious guys that we have in that clubhouse. He’s proven he’s an elite major league pitcher. I think he would embrace more responsibility, and he’s ready for more responsibility.” I guess we will see then…and if he can be more consistent, he IS only 26 (Papelbon is 31…)

Looks like Alfredo Aceves may get his wish in 2012: To become a starter. After his splendid tour of the bullpen last year, I almost wish they would keep him there, but since the Sox currently only have 3 starters for 2012, and the free agent market is lackluster, to say the least, and Aceves, who 2-1 with a 4.18 ERA in 9, split between the Sox and the Skanks, is certainly worth a 2nd look–and he is only 29 years old…

So the Sox have interviewed 5 Managerial Candidates: Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Sandy Alomar Jr., Gene Lamont, and Torey Lovullo, and may see a few more, such as Joey Cora from the Marlins, Jim Wallach from the Dodgers, and Dave Martinez from the Rays–but the Sox are still looking at Thanksgiving for their deadline, so I expect the trimming of this list will be happening in the next day or so…

How is this for a neato stat? Guess who ties A-Fraud with 1,608 hits over the last 10 seasons? Anyone? Beuller? The correct answer is: Orlando Cabrera. Yep, the OC…Never would have guessed THAT…

Finally, The Fish of Florida have a new name–sort of. The Florida Marlins, now the MIAMI Marlins are finally crawling out of the payroll cellar, with a payroll as high as $100 million, to go with their fancy new spring training digs. AND, they have even made and offer to A #1 Free Agent Albert Pujols…Holy Buckets! Should we check for pods in Jeffrey Loria’s basement?

Coming up: General Managers Meetings start today in Milwaukee, and continue through tomorrow, overlapping with the Owners Meetings, which begin tomorrow and run until Wednesday. These meetings “officially” kicks off the Hot Stove…most of the time no major deals happen during these meetings; it’s more of a meet and great to sort of feel out management of other teams and get a lay of the land…
