    October 12, 2011:
BBA Boston Chapter selects a Unanimous
    Walter Johnson Award Winner

Posted by Christine E. at 11:29 am in Baseball,BBA Comments (3)

The penultimate BBA Postseason Award, the Walter Johnson Award, is given to the best pitcher in each league, and was an easy choice for the Boston Chapter–and the one everyone seems to agree on…

After the monster season he has in 2011, going 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA, which included 4 complete games, 2 shut outs and lead the AL in every category except for Complete Games, the unanimous choice for Detroit Tiger Ace and Phenom Justin Verlander was very VERY easy to make. With (7) 1st place votes, equaling 35 points, Justin was double his 2nd place opposition, who was his opponent as the Tigers faced the Skanks for a place in the ALCS.

17 points: CC Sabathia, Yankees, with (2) 2nd Place, and (3) 3rd Place Votes

16 points: Jered Weaver, LA of A Angels with (4) 2nd Place Votes

8 points: Dan Haren, LA of A Angels with (1) 3rd Place, (2) 4th Place, and (1) 5th Place Vote

7 points: James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays, with (1) 3rd Place, (1) 4th Place, and (2) 5th Place Votes

Starters also receiving votes were CJ Wilson, Texas Rangers, with (1) 3rd place, and (1) 5th Place Vote, and Justin’s Detroit Teammate Doug Fister, receiving (1) 4th Place Vote.

It probably goes without saying (which is why I am going to say it) I think a lot of the chapter probably had Jon Lester and Josh Beckett penciled in to be part of the mix for the Walter Johnson Award–and then September happened…and Poof! No more Red Sox starters…

Of course, my selection for the top spot is Justin Verlander–how someone could actually think he was not the best pitcher in the league, if not in all of baseball–is just crazy. As far as my other selections, I chose Jered Weaver, CJ Wilson, Dan Haren, and James Shields, in that order as my other 4. While CC Sabathia is a good pitcher, I am just not all that impressed–and the fact that the Sox have consistently solved him over the years, that influences my choice as well…

Coming up: The Boston Chapter selections will conclude with Stan Musial Award (Best Player) over the weekend, and we will hear from the collective BBA as to how they voted as well…
