    October 5, 2011:
    BBA Boston Chapter announces their
Connie Mack Award Selection for 2011

It’s that time of year again, where all of the member blogs of the Baseball Bloggers Alliance (BBA) get together to vote for our Postseason Awards…

Each Chapter gets 2 votes, and, as Boston is an AL team, we only voted on that 1/2 of the league, and we have chose run it pretty much like other awards organizations do, where each member of the chapter votes for any and all of the awards. Each vote getter is assigned a number value, based on where they are in the voting, and whoever gets the most votes, gets our nod for that award. In addition, the results of the voting must appear in at least one of the chapter’s blogs for the votes to count. This ensures transparency in our voting process.

The first award of 2011 is The Connie Mack Award, given to the Best Manager in the American League. Here are the Boston Chapter’s Top 3 Selections:

20 Points, Joe Maddon, Tampa Bay Rays

6 Points, Jim Leyland, Detroit Tigers

5 Points, Ron Washington, Texas Rangers

Tampa Bay skipper Joe Maddon, who was the Boston Chapters 3rd place selection in 2010, jumped to the front of the pile with a landslide, garnering (6) 1st and (1) 2nd place votes. A distant 2nd with (2) 2nd and (1) 3rd place votes is Tiger’s Manager Jim Leyland, who did not even crack the top 5 in the chapter’s voting last year. Rounding out the Top 3 for 2011 with (1) 2nd place (3) 3rd place votes is the Ranger’s Ron Washington, who fared a bit better in 2010, placing 2nd in that voting…

Joe Girardi of the Yankees, with (1) 1st place vote, and Manny Acta, skipper of the Cleveland Indians, with (1) 2nd place vote, rounded out the Connie Mack voting for 2011…

This is how my personal voting worked out as well, and as much as I wanted to vote for Terry Francona, especially in light of recent events, I just couldn’t. Yeah, I know, the collapse wasn’t his fault, and he certainly deserved better, but… And apparently, none of my brethren could either, as evidenced by him total lack of votes, a year removed from when he was our chapter’s winner…

Joe Maddon clearly deserved the win, as his team stayed focused, played well, and capitalized on the Red Sox collapse in September to get to the postseason. Unfortunately, they could not get past Ron Washington’s Rangers, who, for the 2nd year in a row, have advanced to the ALCS, where they will play either the Skanks or Jim Leyland’s Tigers for the AL Pennant…

Coming up: The Boston Chapter will announce its selection for the Willie Mays Award later this week, and then on Monday, we will find out what the BBA as a whole has to say with regard to their selections…
