    Red Sox 4, Toronto 5:
    Crunch Time.

Posted by Christine E. at 5:54 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (5)

Once again, the Sox are ahead in a game. Once again, Tito sent Daniel Bard out, and once again, he coughs up 3 runs and the Sox lose…And while only 2 of the 3 runs were earned, the unearned run was a result of Bard’s own throwing error, so my feeling is, if a pitcher makes an error that results in unearned runs, they shouldn’t be considered unearned…

This time, he ruined a competent, if not short, outing by John Lackey, who actually only gave up 2 runs on 7 hits in his 5 1/3 inning of work–he certainly kept them in the game, as did Franklin Morales and Alfredo Aceves after him. It was the 8th inning when it all went to hell.

And while the other two errors–A fielding error by Scutaro (his 13th), and Jason Varitek’s 1st of 2011 (a throwing error)–didn’t contribute to any scoring, it’s just the sort of sloppy play that makes me crazy…The rest of Lackey’s line: 115 pitches, 79 for strikes, walking 1, hitting a batter, and striking out 4…

And for Bard’s trouble, he got his EIGHTH loss of the year, and his 5th blown save–and his last 3 outings have directly resulted in a Red Sox loss. He is saying it’s a mechanical issue—that he can only work out “by repetition” Folks, this is a HUGE problem, as you know that Tito is going to continue to throw him out there so he can work this out–and if he continues to do this, the Sox are going to be in a HEAP of trouble…

And that doesn’t even count the million and 15 other problems the Sox have with injuries, inconsistent starting pitching, the inability to actually hit good pitching, blah blah blah…

I don’t normally do a breakdown for anyone but the Skanks, but since the Sox are only ahead 4 games in the Wild Card, and are slated to play their last 4 games against Tampa Bay this weekend, who, coincidently, are the next in line for the Wild Card. I think its time…

1 caveat: While the Sox are only 4 games behind the Skanks, and they still have 3 games to play against them, I think the Division is gone. I hate to say it, but at this point, it’s about getting to the dance, and hopefully being able to get there with pitching lined up for the postseason… Winning the division means nothing if your 1st starter into the postseason is Kyle Weiland or Andrew Miller…

    To the blackboard!

If the Sox Sweep: (OK, stranger things have happened, but yeah, like that is going to happen…) They would have a lovely 8 game wild Card lead–with 10 games to go…

If the Sox Win 3: 6 Game Wild Card Lead, not as good as 8, but more than likely good enough to get them to the Postseason…

If the Sox Win 2: Nothing Changes, the Sox hold onto their 4 game Wild Card Lead, and it will be like these 4 games never happened–and the Sox will probably get to the dance…

If the Sox Win 1: Their Wild Card lead drops to 2, and things get pretty scary…

Then Sox are Swept: The Sox and Tampa Bay are tied for the AL Wild Card–and then it’s anyone’s ballgame…

My prediction? The Sox will win 2–not sure which two, because the starting pitching can go either way, and Rays pitching seems to have a way of keeping Sox offense down…

And I reallyREALLY hope my prediction is right–or better…because the alternative is too depressing to even think about…

Coming up: I hate saying games are must wins–but Holy Buckets, if there were ever 4 games out of the 162 the Sox need to win, it’s these 4. I just hope they have what it takes to make that happen. Rookie Kyle Weiland gets the start to kick off the series, opposed by Jeremy Hellickson. 1st pitch 7:10pm

    Here we go…
