    Red Sox 3, Seattle 5:
    Rhyme of the Ancient Knuckler…

Posted by Christine E. at 4:36 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (6)

Once again, Tim Wakefield pitched a quality start–a complete game outing, throwing 94 pitches, 68 for strikes, and giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits (including a homer) while walking 2 and striking out 4…

But a couple of errors, the 16th passed ball of the season, and that lack of offense by one of the worst teams in all of baseball resulted in a Sox loss–and Wake being stuck on win #199…STILL…

I know he’ll get to 200–but this is the 4th quality start the Sox have gotten from Wake–and he should have won most, if not all of them–and not only does Wake have the 200 win milestone–he only has 7 wins to go to tie Roger Clemens and Cy Young at 192 for the most wins in a Red Sox uniform. Of course, getting there this year was a long shot, but no one knows if Wake will pitch again next year, and if he does, chances are it wont be as a starter. The only reason he is starting so much now is because of the injuries to the pitching staff…It’s just a shame, and, as I (and many others before me) have said: He deserves better…

Kevin Youkilis, out for 2 days because of his balky back, wasted no time in contributing in yesterday’s contest, stroking a 2-run shot to back Wake’s bid for 200..I hope his back issues, which have kept him out a number of games as of late, will not be a “thing”–the Sox have had FAR too many “things” this year…

And I guess I should mention that there is a HALF game standing between the Sox and the Skanks, as they were rained out last night. However, they play tonight, and the Sox are off, so it’s quite possible they will be tied for 1st in the AL East by tomorrow…UGH…

So the Sox let Kevin Millwood go last week because they felt that, despite good numbers in Pawtucket, he would not be able to help them on the major league level. Well, he was picked up by Colorado, and made his 1st start with the Rockies, against the Red, and went 7 innings, and giving up 3 runs. Now, he could get lit up in his next start, but so far, so good for him…And we get stuck with Andrew Miller and Erik Bedard…ducky…

So JD Drew may need surgery on his ailing shoulder? Shocking. He weighs in: ‘It’s something I’m going to have to look at (surgery), making sure that thing stays stable. There’s things I do on a daily basis, normal things, reaching up to grab something, where it pinches. That’s just something you don’t want to have to deal with in baseball, or for the rest of your life for that matter.’ He continues to take batting practice in the hopes he will return this season. Before his injury sidelined him on July 20th, he had lost his starting job to Josh Reddick, and was batting .219 with 4 homers. I think he should go have the surgery RIGHT NOW, and consider this season a lost cause. I don’t want him coming back and then Tito doing the loyalty think and actually PLAYING him…UGH…

Coming up: A day off today, then a day-night doubleheader against Tampa Bay, one of them being the make-up fro me the rainout on April 13th. Works out well, as this was an odd-ball 2 days into Fenway sandwiched between 13 road games… Jon Lester gets the nod for the day game, opposed by James Shields. 1st pitch 1:05pm. Then Erik Bedard will make attempt #3 to get his `1st win in a Red Sox uniform by taking the mound in the evening game. He is opposed by Jeff Niemann… 1st pitch…7:10pm….
