    Red Sox 4, Cleveland 3:
    2 for Jake!

Posted by Christine E. at 7:01 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

Holy Buckets! I am watching the end of the game last night, and Jacoby Ellsbury comes up to bat, and I am thinking “NO WAY he could pull this off again” and then, Bam! Solo shot to Center Field–his 18th homer of the 2011 campaign. And Jacoby Ellsbury has his 2nd walk of win in as many days. And, just in case you were wondering, how many walk off wins DOES Jacoby Ellsbury have? Yep–TWO….

And, that sound you hear? Is the sound of Scott Boras already compiling the 1000 page dossier on Ellsbury for when he goes to sign his first contract–which should be in the range of 15 years, $350 million…UGH…

Once again, Tim Wakefield pitched well enough to get the win, and once again the Sox offense failed to score enough runs to get him said win. Wake went 6 2/3 innings, throwing 99 pitches, 64 for strikes, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits (including a homer) while walking 2 and striking out 6…Papelbon picked up HIS 4th win of the season, with his perfect 9th inning, where he struck out 1…Perhaps the 3rd time will be the charm for Wake to get that 200th win–he will pitch sometime again early next week…So the official word on That Clay Person and his broken back has come down from Dr. Thomas Gill, the Medical Director of the Boston Red Sox. When asked if Clay could come back to all this year: “I think there’s absolutely a chance, I just don’t know how big that chance is. I think there’s a great chance that he would be healed by then, or that the fracture would be stable by then. The question then is, ‘How much time does Clay need to get Major League ready?’” Apparently, the stress fractures are a hold over from a very old injury, or when his bones were developing, they call it a “pars defect.”

More Hardware: Completely non-surprising that, after pretty much having a hit for every game in the month of July, Dustin Pedroia was named AL player of the month. In the span he had a .411 batting average, 46 hits, including 18 for extra bases, and touched 81 total bases for the month…

And how is THIS for a Neato Stat? Derek Jeter’s 2011 Numbers: 36 RBI’s, 4 homers and an OPS+ of 85. The Red Sox newest bench guy, Mike Aviles’ 2011 numbers: 31 RBI’s, 5 homers and an OPS+ of 82….HAHAHAHAHA….

It always seems that no matter what he does, A-Fraud always seems to step in it. This time is some sort of illegal celebrity poker game. Major league baseball is not happy, and will apparently be talking to him about it: “We take this very seriously and have been investigating this matter since the initial allegation. As part of the investigation, the commissioner’s office will interview Mr. Rodriguez.” A-Fraud has been on the DL for the last couple of weeks as he recovers from knee surgery.

Finally, our friends from eTrue Sports have ripped the lid off the whole A-Rod thing, sort of: A-Rod Denies Gambling, Announces Yard Sale: Anticipating a dramatic income downturn due to suspension, Alex Rodriguez announced he would host a series of Sunday open house tag sales at his Miami mansion during October. “If I can’t play baseball in autumn, there’s nothing I’d rather be doing than selling branded A-Rod memorabilia in a comfortable garage setting,” explained Rodriguez. You can read all about it here

Coming up: The Sox play their final game against Cleveland tonight, going for the series win. Erik Bedard takes the mound for his Red Sox debut, opposed by old friend Justin Masterson, who kicked Sox ass the last time he faced them. Let’s hope Bedard fares better than in his last outing against Tampa Bay, where he could not get out of the 2nd inning, and gave up 5 runs in the process…1st pitch 7:10pm…
