Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 9:
    Things that make you go…YUK

    Posted by Christine E. at 6:40 pm in Baseball,Good Deeds,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

John Lackey, you need to go away NOW–on the DL, to another team, hell, to another planet–Whatever. You just. Need. To. Go. Away…

I’ll admit, I wasn’t optimistic when John Lackey came off the DL. He sucked before, he’ll suck again… But then he had that pretty brilliant outing..and actually has 3 since coming off the DL.  And he did really well in his last outing in Philly, going 7 2/3 innings and only giving up 2 runs…

But then there was yesterday:  Throwing 65 pitches, 41 or strikes, he managed 2 1/3 innings, giving up 7 runs on 9 hits (including a homer), while walking 0 and striking out 2 in that span….That goes WAY beyond abysmal….

And, of course, Lackey being Lackey:  “Overall, my arm felt pretty good. Probably one of the better ones it’s felt as far as velocity, stuff like that. I just didn’t locate well enough.”  Ya think?Maybe Peter Gammons wasn’t so far off the mark after all about Lackey needing Tommy John…

Yukky Lackey Fact: The Sox still owe him $53.38 million on the 5-year $82.5 million deal they signed him to in December of 2009…

Yukky Lackey Stat #1: His current ERA of 7.47 is the WORST IN BASEBALL amongst pitchers who have thrown at least 70 innings this year…

Yukky Lackey Stat #2: He has made 7 starts at Fenway Park this year.  His ERA for those games?  9.17…

So That Clay Person, who was originally just taking a rest on the DL, and would be back as soon as he could be activated, was then that was changed to immediately after the All-Star Break, and now  it’s less certain.  He met with the team doctor, Dr. Thomas Gill yesterday, and, as a result, will be meeting back specialist, Dr. Craig Brigham, in North Carolina this week. Tito weighs in: “It’s just kind of interesting: it just hurts when he does certain things pitching. He’s moving around so well other than that, but obviously, because he’s a pitcher, when we send him out there, we want him to know that even if it hurts he’s not hurting himself.”  This doesn’t bode well….Clay has been on the DL with lower back strain since June 17th…

The completely un surprising duo of Big Papi and Adrian Gonzalez won their All-Star starting positions via the voting public, with Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Beckett getting their nods via the player and manager’s votes.  All are deserving, and while I think it would be nice if Jon Lester was selected as well, I don’t think he was gypped or anything…

Game #82 of the All-Star game will kick off a week today at Chase Field in Arizona, home of the Diamondbacks.  Unfortunately, it will air on Fox…

In addition to his duties on the playing field for the game next Tuesday, David Ortiz will also captain the AL Team of the Home Run Derby.  They have changed the formatting this year, opting to go with two 4-man teams, AL and NL, and each team Captain will choose 3 other players to hit with him.  Adrian Gonzalez will be one of the hitter selected by Big Papi, and I expect Jose Bautista, the AL Home Run Leader, will be chosen as well…rounding out the 4-man team will be Robinson Cano, which I think is a poor choice, especially since Josh Hamilton is an All-Star as well…  Prince Fielder is the captain for the NL team, and they will face off next Monday night.  For me, the best HR Derby EVER was when Josh Hamilton hit homer after homer after homer in 2008…

Finally, As part of his 6th annual Celebrity Putt Putt that will happen in a few weeks, Jason Varitek is once again raffling off his 4th of July equipment.  Tickets are only $2 each (you must purchase a minimum of 5) with the proceeds benefiting Journey Forward.

And, if you are interested, spectator tickets for the July 21st event are still available for $50 each, which includes a photograph with Jason Varitek and a $50 gift certificate to Athletic Evolution. You can purchase tickets here

The event will be held at the Athletic Evolution, 78 Olympia Avenue, Woburn, MA.  For more information, you can check out their website or call (781) 935-7701.

About Journey Forward: A 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to bettering the lives of those who have suffered a Spinal Cord Injury, Journey Forward was founded by Dan Cummings, who after a diving accident was diagnosed a C6 quadriplegic and was told he would never walk again. After attending a similar program in California, 7 years after his accident, Dan walked out the doors determined to bring the program back to Boston. Journey Forward is an exercise based program designed to assist those with Spinal Cord Injuries so they too can achieve some of these most basic lifelong functions and benefits.

Coming up:  John Lester, hoping to put the Sox back on the path, and earn his 11th win of the 2011 campaign, takes the ball tonight in game 2 of this 3-game series against Toronto.  He is opposed by Blue Jays starter Brett Cecil.  1st pitch 7:10pm…
