    Red Sox 1, Phillies 2:
    Not the Expected Armageddon

Posted by Christine E. at 5:54 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

Well, with Big Papi playing 1st, Adrian Gonzalez playing Right, and John Lackey pitching, I expected this to be a massacre of epic proportions…

Instead, it was a complete non event, the scoring was low, Lackey pitched a very good game, and even contributed the Sox only run of the contest (yes, you heard me.) and…The Sox lost…

How on EARTH does a team who scores 15-16 runs in like 5 games in a row, suddenly become unable to score 2? Because in this Phillies series thus far–they have scored ONE…

Probably a good thing that it was blacked out in the home offic of Boston Red Thoughts, this game would have frustrated the crap out of me…

Lackey’s line: 7 2/3 innings, throwing 90 pitches, 65 for strikes, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits (including the game winning homer by Raul Ibanez–which is no surprise as he hits .386 against him) while walking one and striking out 5..) A more than competent outing, and one of the best we have seen from him this year–but the offense came up with NOTHING…

And since the Skanks don’t seem to have the same interleague FUNK as the Sox do this year, they have firmly retaken the lead in the AL East, with 2.5 games–and Tampa Bay is breathing down their necks, with only 1 game separating them from the Sox…UGH…

So Peter Gammons is speculating that John Lackey may need Tommy John surgery…The ball club is disputing the claim–and if it were anyone by The Commissioner, I would think they were crazy…But could be pitch as well as he did if his elbow is that messed up? But you gotta love Tito, smartass that he is: “Go get em Lack, because you have six starts left and then you’ll have Tommy John [surgery].”

Looks like That Clay Person will not be back before the All-Star Break, despite the fact that he is eligible for activation from his lower back strain on Saturday. He weighs in: “[I'm] probably set back a little bit. I’d rather come back after the All-Star break and be healthy, if that’s the case, unless something happens that what we’re doing is going to make it feel better in the next three or four days and then I could look at pitching when we get back home. I want to make sure I’m ready for August and September. “If something happens and I go out and pitch and feel 80 percent, then this happens again and I have to go back on the DL, that’s not what I, or I don’t think the team wants. That’s where we’re at right now.” Stay on the DL, we got it covered….

And in a surprising move, the Sox have designated Mike Cameron for assignment. They have 10 days to trade or release, or could place him on waivers, and if he clears, he could accept an assignment in the minor leagues. The Sox have called up Yamaico Navarro to replace Mike on the 25 man….

Tonight, at 11:59PM, the All-Star balloting ends, and only a little more than 120K votes stand between Jacoby and his 1st All-Star Game. So crack out those e-mail addresses–yep, even the ones you had a couple of years ago and stopped checking, and get cracking (LINK)! The results will be announced on Sunday…

tumblr lnkvrpU9oC1qlmnoeo1 r1 500Finally, Gary Finkler over at 7th Inning Sketch came up with these neat cartoons, one about Big Papi…,

tumblr lnfla2eJng1qlmnoeo1 r1 500And one about the man who ruined Dodger baseball (and thankfully, did not get his meat hooks in the Sox..) Frank McCourt…

Coming up: The Sox play their final game against the Phillies this afternoon–the end of this, not coming soon enough. Jon Lester takes the mound to try to stop the skid, as well as come back from his not so stellar previous outing. He is opposed by Cole Hamels. 1st pitch 1:05pm

And then they head to Houston for the final 3 games of this Interleague Play thing–and not a moment too soon–It’s much more fun when the Sox beat up on the Quad A clubs…
