    April 15, 2011:
    Getting on Track….

Posted by Christine E. at 4:48 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

I was going to say “Getting BACK on Track”, but since the Sox have never actually BEEN on track (remember the 10 game losing streak in Spring Training?), there is really nothing to get BACK to….

And it’s official: Adrian Gonzales has been signed to the 2nd largest contract the Sox have ever signed a player to–and the largest ever by this ownership: 7 years, $154 million, which includes a signing bonus…The Sox wanted to wait until after Opening Day so the contract will not count against this year’s revenue calculations…

How are these for Yukky stats? Daisuke actually has a BETTER RECORD than John Lackey! Holy Buckets! But it’s true, let’s break it down:

Daisuke: 7 IP, giving up 10 runs on 14 hits (including 3 homers) while striking out 4. His ERA is an awful 12.86

Lackey: 8 2/3 IP, giving up 15 runs on 17 hits (including 3 homers) while striking out 5. His ERA is an abysmal 15.58

Of course, both are sucking out loud in about 15 different colors…But it says a lot when the Sox actually opt to skip Lackey’s start and let Daisuke pitch his regular turn…

But do you know who actually is the best starter in the rotation right now? Yep, Josh Beckett. He is the only starter who has not given up a home run yet, has given up only 3 runs on 7 hits, and with his 2.08 ERA…he certainly LOOKS like he is reclaiming his spot as staff Ace…

Well, the Barry Bonds trial is over–for now, having convicted the slugger of obstruction of justice. There will be a hearing in May to schedule a sentencing date on that charge. There are still the 3 other charges (Lying under oath, use of steroids, use of human-growth hormone)that were deadlocked, resulting in mistrials, so the government has to decide whether or not they want to retry these charges…No matter what, I don’t see him serving any jail time…

Finally, in honor of Jackie Robinson Day, which coincides with his Birthday, MLB has launched a commemorative website Filled with personal tributes by players and legends of the game, including Hall of Famers, as well as All-Stars. If you tweet, you can add your own thoughts to theirs with the hash tag #MLBIM42. You can also check out their Facebook page. The topic, of course, is “What Jackie Robinson Means to Me”

Coming up: Let’s hope the last 2 days off have done SOMETHING to help the Sox start winning. That Clay Person, fresh off his almost $30 million contract signing, takes the mound, and will hopefully fare better than he has so far this year(0-2, 7.20 ERA). He is opposed by Brett Cecil of Toronto who has an identical ERA to Clay. 1st pitch: 7:10pm.
