    Red Sox 11, Rangers 26:
    The Trifecta of Baseball Yukiness…

Posted by Christine E. at 9:50 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

Yeah, I know, that was not a score this weekend–but it was the compilation of the scoring this weekend, and it very plainly shows how dreadfully bad the Sox were these last 3 days…

But, if you like, we can look at the scores for each contest:

Red Sox 5, Rangers 9: Ace Jon Lester, in one of his crappy April starts, gave up 3 Homers, and then Daniel Bard came in and gave up 4 runs of his own…

    FAIL…

Red Sox 5, Rangers 12: John Lackey got shelled (9 runs on 10 hits, including 2 homers), and the Sox got bit on the ass by Adrian Beltre who hit a Grand Slam in the 4th inning to put the game completely out of reach. But I bet he FELT good, even with his nifty 22.09….

    STUPENDOUS FAIL…

And for the record, Josh Hamilton: (whom I do like, and hope is very successful, having overcome his demons) I have absolutely NO regrets (Grand Slam notwithstanding) that the Sox did not sign Beltre–NONE….

Red Sox 1, Rangers 5: Clay Buchholz, with an inexplicable FOUR homers in his outing, perfectly rounded out this bad and awful weekend…

And, of course, it would not be complete without Jonathan Papelbon and his 9.00 ERA, managing to strike out the side, but not before giving up a run, walking one (intentionally), hitting a batter and loading the bases in the 8th inning…

    A RIGHT UP THERE FAIL…

Of course, there is plenty of blame to go around: Carl Crawford going 0-7 with 4 strikeouts in his 1st two games with the Sox (pressing much?) and Tito having to move him to #7 in the batting order, where he fared better in the 3rd game.(2-4, both singles, and an RBI) Then there is Jarrod Saltalamacchia who went 0-10 with FIVE strikeouts this weekend…

And let’s not forget the 11 Homers…yes, ELEVEN homers given up by Red Sox pitching over the 3 day span….Last time that happened? Glad you asked…1919–yes, NINETY TWO years ago…

I think Dustin Pedroia can speak for all of us: “…They kicked our ass, that’s it. We better show up and play better on whatever day we play again. We have to play better than we’ve been playing…”

Frankly, the only bright spot of the weekend? David Ortiz hit 2 homers in the 1st 2 games, and gained sole possession of the all-time RBI total for a DH this weekend with 1,004. Edgar Martinez held the honor prior to Big Papi…

Thankfully, the Sox dont play the Rangers again until they see them at Fenway at the end of August. However, I think that the path to the World Series will be through them, so the Sox better figure out a way to beat this team….

Last week, Gordon Edes (yes, GORDO) dropped me a line, asking for my predictions for the 2011 campaign. Of course, I in no way predicted the debacle that was this weekend, but you can read it all here

Finally, Kurt Smith’s Ballpark E-Guide to Fenway Park, which I wrote about back in January has been updated for the 2011 Campaign. For the cost of $5.00, you can have all you need to know for a game at Fenway Park at your fingertips. Check it out!

Coming up: The Sox had an off-day today, where they can hopefully regroup, refocus, re-SOMETHING…and then the Nation’s eyes look to Josh Beckett to stop this skid and put the Sox back on the path of righteousness, as he kicks off the 3 game series against Cleveland. He was brilliant in his final outing of Spring Training, can he do it again? Oh, boy, I hope so…. Josh is opposed by righty Josh Tomlin. 1st pitch 7:05pm…

It’s okay. We’ll be fine. It’s early. Keep the faith! Here’s to hoping Josh Beckett talks us off the ledge!
