    February 16, 2011:
10 Days until Some Actual Games!

Posted by Christine E. at 7:07 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

Again, I know they will be games against college ballplayers, and split squad stuff, and games where, by the 6th inning, you are looking at the lineup and asking “Who ARE these guys?” But it will be some form of organized baseball–and since we still have 6 week (this Friday) until the real stuff–I’ll take it…

As it is during Spring Training, the press likes to focus on a player a day, unless there is something REALLY going on–today, its Josh Beckett, and he weighs in: “You’re trying to make up for two bad starts in one pitch and, in that aspect, I think we’re all probably guilty of that from time to time. Trying to do too much right now when really all you need to focus on is this start and not focus on five starts from now or two starts from now or even two pitches from now. So in that aspect, I think we’re all guilty of that at times, but yes, I do think I was guilty of that sometimes.”

At least he came back to camp in shape, not like a flabby mess he was a the year before last–he also said he did alot of core work to help with his back issues–He is only 30–there is no reason to believe that he really is starting to decline…And, honestly I have to believe that last year’s abysmal record (6-6, with an ERA of 5.78) HAD to be an aberration–didn’t it?

Apparently, Jarrod Saltalamacchia is trying to emulate Jason Varitek as much as possible, even to the point of having some of the same mannerisms. I think this can only be a good thing–then Beckett cannot blame having to be caught by Victor Martinez as his excuse for not pitching as well as he did when Jason Varitek caught him. He’ll have a ‘Tek clone–Let’s hope his approach is as successful for him as it was/is for Jason Varitek…

It’s interesting to note that one of the reasons that Kevin Youkilis is glad to be back at 3rd base is that now he doesn’t have to talk to the people on 1st base….That is SO old school baseball–and vintage Youk…

It was bound to happen eventually: Minor Leaguer Williams Abreu, playing for the Dominican summer league, tested positive for the Performance Enhancing Drug Nandrolone and will serve his 50 game suspension at the beginning of the season, his 1st season playing… C’mon guys, you KNOW they test for this stuff–do you really think you can dodge the bullet forever–stupid risk to take….

The long-time WEEI Dale and Holley Show is now: “Merloni and Mutnansky”? Apparently, in an effort to boost ratings, Michael Holly is joining Glenn Ordway on the “Big Show” in the afternoons, with Lou Merloni and Mike Mutnansky taking middays. Dale Arnold, will serve as a fill in when necessary. Oh, the cutthroatedness of radio. You could be a HUGE deal for 20 years, and the next day be gone…These moves will be happening at the end of February….

Finally, from our friends at eTrue Sports: “After losing 30 pounds by laying off Cap’n Crunch, the NY Yankees’ CC Sabathia will now swear off Lucky Charms and Frosted Flakes and figures he’ll be down to 195 by opening day.”

Feh–when he starts laying off the Boo Berries and Fruity Pebbles, THEN I will be impressed…

I have discovered some important things through your website post. One other stuff I would like to talk about is that there are various games out there designed specially for preschool age children. They involve pattern acceptance, colors, wildlife, and styles. These commonly focus on familiarization in lieu of memorization. This will keep little children engaged without experiencing like they are studying. Thanks

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own blog and was wondering what all is needed to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet savvy so I’m not 100% sure. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Appreciate it
