    November 23, 2010:
    A Watched Pot….

Certainly does not boil, as evidenced by the fact that there is still a ton of speculating going on, but nothing close to even a discussion of a deal is happening right now. Of course, its not even Turkey Day yet, its early. But all of us can remember the famous Thanksgiving dinner Theo had with the Schillings in 2003, as part of the dance that brought Curt to New York

Looks like Theo will be spending Turkey day with HIS fam this year…

Holy Buckets–Is Johnny Damon on crack? We don’t need to review the whole “I would never sign with the Skanks”-then playing for the Skanks thing again.  But then there was the whole refusal to come to Boston at the July 31st trading line in 2010, opting to stay with the spiraling Tigers. So NOW that he is a free agent again, and NO ONE is banging on his door looking for an aging fielder who throws like a girl, and really can only DH these days, Skeezy Bastard was actually quoted as saying that “Boston would now be a good spot.” And, yes, when I read that, I actually snarfed my coffee…

Speaking of snarfing my coffee: The Boston Globe had a pollabout how the fans would react if the world went completely insane, and Derek Jeter was ever signed to play for the Sox. The choices were

Cheers! You root for the jersey.

Boos! He’d probably wear pinstriped underwear.

And, of the 9,416 votes, over EIGHTY % voted for the cheers option…Are you freaking KIDDING me? YUK…

And, I guess it was inevitable, especially since Victor Martinez refused the 2 year contract that was offered to him by the Sox during the season–and he also rejected the 3 year/$36 million, and finally the last one:  4 years/$42 million.  Receiving 4 offers, including the one from the Sox, Martinez also was courted by the Oreos (4 years/$48 million) the White Sox (3 years/$48 million) and finally the deal he ent with: 4 years/$50 million from the Detroit Tigers…The deal was announced this morning…I am sure it will be pending a physical and the like, but its all over but the shouting…

So, at this point, I guess the Sox will go with Jarrod Saltalamacchia as the everyday catcher, and sign Jason Varitek as the mentor/backup catcher. I am not sure how I feel about that. While I am glad that there may be a place for ‘Tek–Saltalamacchia as the everyday? Not super sold on that on yet…

Coming up: Tonight at midnight is the deadline for teams to offer salary arbitration to their free agents so that they woudl still get draft-pick compensation. Then a week from now (Nov 30) is the deadline the same free agents have to accept the arbitration offered by the incumbent teams…
