    November 8, 2010:
    One Week in…

Posted by Christine E. at 8:11 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (3)

Holy Buckets..There hasn’t been any baseball in about a week, and we are in to a little more than a month of Red Sox-less baseball, and already, I am in serious withdrawl…It doesn’t help that the weather is cold, wet, and Daylight Savings Time happened–which means I am all messed up (yes, even more than usual) for about a week…

Some random thoughts for a cold and bleary Monday…

So probably the 2 biggest question of the off-season for the Sox are: Will Adrian Gonzales become available, and if he does, how much is the Sox willing to spend to get their man?

And of course, if the Sox sign Gonzales, another Adrian, of the Beltre variety, is less of a priority. Then the Sox could go with Jed Lowrie (if he can stay healthy) at 3rd base, and not overpay for Beltre…cause you KNOW Boras is going to go for ridiculous money, even though Beltre is getting older, there are few teams that need a 3rd baseman that can actually afford him, and his offensive skill set is well suited to the Fens…

Well, it was bound to happen: The Skanks have reached out to Cliff Lee’s agent to start the process of negotiating a deal. I cannot even tell you how queasy this makes me. My friend Paul from Boston says that is Cliff Lee goes to the Skanks, he is going to start calling them the New York Indians. Me, I will probably be nauseous for the whole 2011 campaign. After the Skankee fans yelled obscenities, threw beer and SPIT on his wife it would be pretty crappy of him to play for that team–but then again, money is a great equalizer. But then again, again, Cliff Lee seems not to be as influenced by money as others. AND wouldn’t that be a GIANT ^&&% you to Skankeeland if he did not sign with New York?

Another factor there is new owner for the Rangers Nolan Ryan is pretty committed to fielding a good team, and the fact that the Rangers made it to their 1st World Series EVER, is a pretty compelling argument to try and keep their ace…

And how bout the fact that Carl Pavano has totally reinvented himself as a decent pitcher? So glad he waited until he left the Skanks to do that–remember the 1786 days between starts? The constant, crazy injuries? Good times!

And what is going to happen behind the dish? The Sox have Jarrod Saltalamacchia under their control for 2011. so that leave, Jason Varitek, and Victor Martinez–but either choice depends on how they want to use Saltalamacchia–not sure he is ready to be an everyday catcher for the Boston Red Sox–and Varitek cannot play every day. And then there is Victor, who turned down the 2 year deal the Sox have offered. Interesting stuff. OR, the Sox could go after someone totally different as the starting catcher –John Buck, Bengie Molina and A.J. Pierzynski are available, to name a few…

The Sox may be losing another member of their coaching staff. DeMarlo Hale wil be interviewing with the Mets for their vacant managing position–and with the fact that JP Ricciardi, former GM of Toronto, is a huge fan, it could happen. And, apparently, Hale was a close 2nd to John Farrell in Toronto…

Finally, some most EXCELLENT news!  After 21 years in the Sunday night ESPN broadcast booth, Jon Miller and Joe Morgan will not be back next year–Morgan’s contract is expiring, and while Miller’s is expiring as well, he will still do some work for the network–Lets HOPE they get some commentary that is less pro-Skankee all the time…

Coming up: Some meetings on the radar for next week: November 16th and 17th, the General Managers Meetings will be held in Orlando. Sometimes stuff happens. Sometimes it doesn’t..but things usually start brewing there… then later in the week, on the 17th and 18th, the Owners head to Orlando for their annual off-season meeting…

Oh, and in case you were wondering? 101 days until Pitchers and Catchers..UGH…

Agreed, we are so spoiled with baseball virtually year round, that in the few months that they are off we go insane! Cannot wait to see what next season brings!
