    November 4, 2010:
    Let the Hot Stove Begin!

Posted by Christine E. at 5:56 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

While I was glad to see the Giants win the World Series, I was a bit disappointed the Rangers didn’t at least win another game or two–at least make it a series/extend the 2010 camping just a bit longer…

As the new 3-day window to for clubs to negotiate with their pending free agents closes tonight at midnight, alot of things are happening…

In a move that surprised no one, the Sox exercised David Ortiz’s 1 year, $12.5 million option for 2011. Of course, Big Papi was looking for a multi-year deal, but no agreement could be reached prior to today. Theo weighs in: “David is a player who is very important to our ownership and to our fans, and given these feelings — the fact that he’s still very productive and the fact that there was a one-year solution built into the contract, this seemed like not only the most likely outcome, but also the one that balanced all the variables and factors in the most appropriate manner.” Isn’t it amazing how he can talk, and really say nothing?

Also, not surprising, Adrian Beltre declined his option with the Sox and is now a free agent. I expect the Scott Boras Dossier about how Beltre is worth a skaziollion dollars a year for 10 years. Although it’s almost a guarantee that nothing will happen, the Sox have until Saturday to exclusively negotiate with Beltre…Don’t think the dossier will be ready by then…

And I love the fact that Derek Jeter becoming a free agent is actually NEWS–Puhleese–do you really think the Skanks won’t sign him and have him retire with the ballclub? And if some kind of agreement could not be reached, (as if) where is he going to go? Tampa Bay? Detroit? Yeah, OK…

So, John Farrell goes to Toronto, and the Sox get a new pitching coach: Curt Young, formerly of Oakland for the last 7 seasons. Tito weighs in on his newest coach: “We (him and John Farrell) both came up with Curt as the No. 1 choice for the Boston Red Sox for a lot of different factors. It was something I appreciated John doing and it was something I did at the same time. Now saying that, I didn’t run across and tell Curt that. This was just something I messed around with in September.” Now, let’s hope he can get Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon on track…

Finally, next Wednesday, November 10, 2010 from 7-10pm, Kevin Youkilis will be holding a fundraiser at Boston’s brand new piano bar Howl at the Moon.

Sing into the Off Season, will benefit Kevin Youkilis Hits for Kids, and will feature live performances from two of Boston’s best acts, Will Dailey and Entrain, as well as the dueling pianos of Howl at the Moon.

The performers are also featured on the benefit CD Music Hits Home, released in the summer of 2010 by Rounder Records. A compilation of songs by some of today’s top national and local New England artists, Music Hits Home includes Dave Matthews Band, the Allman Brothers, Lori McKenna, Dropkick Murphys and many more.

In addition to the music, the evening will include silent and live auctions, a 50-50 raffle and much more. Tickets to Sing into the Off-Season are $100 and include a copy of the Music Hits Home CD. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling 781-444-9685. If you are in the neighborhood, sounds like a great evening, for a great cause…

Coming up: The Hot stove will hopefully start to heat up–but until then, here are some dates to keep in mind:

February 13th, it’s the voluntary spring training reporting date for pitchers, catchers and injured players.

AND, the day we all wait for the moment the season end: Pitchers and catchers: February 18, with the mandatory reporting date for all remaining players being March 1.

So, that means we have 3+ months until Pitchers and Catchers–UGH…
