    October 18, 2010:
    Postseason and Red Sox Randomness…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:06 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comment (1)

Some random thoughts that came to me while I was watching some of the games this weekend…

Despite the fact the Rangers totally blew a 5 run lead in game one (Thank you very little Darren Oliver) and could have been going to Skankee Stadium tonight 2-0, rather than 1-1, the fact that The Skank Ace got beat up for 5 runs (including a 3 run shot by Josh Hamilton) and now is posting a 11.25 ERA is a beautiful thing–CC Sabathia is supposed to be the “go to guy–the best they have” And I am loving the whole “Should they use AJ Burnett in game 4?” I think they should, and I hope to hell he gets rung like a bell…

Did anyone else notice that Giant’s closer Brian Wilson must have used about 8 boxes of Just For Men jet black hair dye on his beard? Or, the alternate theory, courtesy of my husband: “his teammates covered his face with gorilla glue while he was sleeping, and threw live poodles at him….” Yes, thank you, welcome to my world….

Joe Buck and Tim McCarver are still as inane, vacuous, and irrelevant as they have ever been–no I am not surprised, nor was I expecting anything different–just wanted to make sure everyone knew…

Since we are well into the LCS’s, lets look at possible match ups for the World Series…

The best matchup would be: The Rangers and the Giants–something totally different, and not a Skankee or Phillie in sight–and that is a beautiful thing…

The 2nd best: The Rangers and the Phillies–while I do not like the Phillies, there are still no Skanks in sight

The 3rd best (or the 2nd worst): The Giants and the Skanks–If this happens, the Giants better get it done…

The absolutely worst, or, as fellow BBA’er Cyn of Toeing the Rubber said last week: “The idea of another Phillies/Yankees World Series makes me sad”: The Skanks and the Phillies–and chances are, I would not be watching a blessed minute of THAT–but I will say this, if it does come down to these 2 teams–the freaking Phillies better get it done this year…

Right now, both series are tied 1-1, and I have NO idea where they are going to go…

So, the Sox signed Jarrod Saltalamacchia (You will never hear me call him “Salty”–UGH) to a 1-year, non-guaranteed contract, avoiding arbitration. What this means for the Red Sox catching for 2011 remains to be seen–he’s not really ready to be an everyday catcher in Boston (he is only 25—and less than a year removed from “the yips”) but if the Sox do not sign Victor Martinez, what else do they have? Jason Varitek (whom I would very much like to see retire as a member of the Boston Red Sox) is not an everyday catcher anymore…But, since the contract with Saltalamacchia is not guaranteed, he can be released at any time…It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

And how bout the fact that Darnell McDonald played the entire season with a bad thumb? No one even knew about he injury (he sustained it during Spring Training) it until his end of the year physical. So he had the surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb last week, and will be ready for spring training. Despite his injury, McDonald managed to play 117 games, hitting .270 with 9 homers and 34 RBI’s….

Finally, its time for the This Year in Baseball Awards, and of course, the Sox are well-represented as nominees…

Terry Francona (Best Manager), Adrian Beltre (Best Hitter), Clay Buchholz, and Jon Lester (Best Pitcher), Jonathan Papelbon (Best Closer) Daniel Bard (Best Setup Man) The April 20th Game where Darnell McDonald became a household name in Boston, hitting both the tying run in the 8th and the game winning one in the 9th (Best Game) and Daniel Nava’s Grand Slam on his 1st pitch of his major league career on June 12th (Best moment). I agree with all of the selections, with the exception of (no surprise here) Jonathan Papelbon. Not that he is going to win, but his performance this year was sub par–and that is being kind…

Coming up: The Rangers and Skanks are at the Stadium for Games 3-4-5, with Game 3 tonight at 8:07PM. Cliff Lee goes for the Rangers, opposed by Andy Pettitte for the Skanks–this should be a good one….

[...] Just for the record, it appears that Giants’ closer Brian Wilson’s teammates once again got busy with the Gorilla Glue, and this time threw small farm animals at his face. That beard is ridiculous–and the best [...]
