The same way the Boston chapter of the BBA voted for the Connie Mack Award earlier this week, each vote getter is assigned a number value, based on where they are in the voting, and whoever gets the most votes, gets our nod for the best rookie of 2010.
Here are our results:
15 points Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers
10 points Austin Jackson, Detroit Tigers
3 points Brennan Boesch, Detroit Tigers
1 point Danny Valencia, Minnesota Twins
1 point Wade Davis, Tampa Bay Rays
As you can see, the Boston Chapter is pretty much in agreement as to who deserves the Rookie of 2010 nod. Texas Rangers closer Neftali Perez with his 40 saves and 2.43 ERA in his 1st season of play, was the unanimous choice for the top spot, with 5 1st place votes. Austin Jackson of the Detroit Tigers also garnered the unanimous support of the chapter for 2nd place with the 5 available votes. His teammate, Brennan Boesch, garnered 3 of the 3rd place votes, making him the Boston Chapters 3rd place selection as rookie of the year. Rounding out our voting, Danny Valencia of the Twins and Wade David of the Rays each received 1 3d place vote.
Again, our chapter voting fell in line with what I was thinking in terms of rookie performance. This is always a difficult award for me to choose, as a rookie’s contribution to a team is not always apparent to someone who does not follow that specific team. When the Sox have an exceptional young player, I will obviously be more attuned to that, than I would for, the Detroit Tigers…
Coming up: The Boston Chapter will announce its selection for the Goose Gossage (best reliever) and Walter Johnson (best pitcher) next week, and we will also find out how we stacked up against the BBA as a whole…
