Red Sox 2, White Sox 8:
    So much for 20 wins…

Posted by Christine E. at 2:47 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

Well, last’s night’s debacle was certainly nothing to write home about: Jon Lester, going for his 20th win of the season, pretty much did the exact opposite–got royally lit up.

4+ innings of 8-run ball, including a Grand Slam by Paul Konerko and far, FAR too many walks–all combined for one of his worst outings this season.

The rest of the worst: 99 pitches, 52 for strikes, 9 hits, (including another homer in addition to the GS) while walking and striking out 5…

And, of course, as Murphy and his law would have it, the Sox bullpen combined for a brilliant outing of 2 hit ball over 4 innings…But in spite of the flogging, Lester fared pretty well for 2010: In 32 starts, he pitched 208 innings and went 19-9 with a 3.25 ERA, and struck out 225 batters. And remember, he is only 26-and I truly believe we have not even seen the best of Jon Lester yet…

Despite what they are saying, the Sox have been fading into the woodwork since being eliminated from postseason play. Guess I can’t blame them–it must be hard to work up enthusiasm for meaningless games…

But they had better snap out of it this weekend, as they need to help Tampa Bay take the Division, leaving the Skanks as the Wild Card–It’s all we got left, so let’s hope they do it…

Because of that, we are going to do something a bit different, something we have never done before–we are going to do standings calculation for 3 teams, and how the Sox will impact the Skanks and Tampa Bay…

    Here we go…To the Blackboard!

As of today, the Skanks and Tampa Bay are tied for 1st place, with 3 games to go. The Skanks head to Fenway to play 3 against the Sox, Tampa Bay stays with KC for their final 3…

    So:

If the Sox sweep: Tampa Bay needs to win just ONE game this weekend to take the Division.

If the Sox win 2: Tampa Bay needs to win 2 to take the division

If the Sox win 1: Tampa Bay needs to win all their game to beat the Skanks by 1 game

If the Skanks sweep: Tampa Bay needs to win all of their games to force a tie breaker for the division, probably Monday or Tuesday of next week…

OK, now my BRAIN hurts from all of that…Great…

My personal feeling: The Sox will in at least 1–probably the Saturday game, where That Clay Person will go up against that Punk AJ Burnett…

Finally, On Saturday, November 6, 2010, Boston Sports Bloggers from all over the world will converge on The Baseball Tavern on Boylston Street at high noon for Boston Sports Blogapalooza II. BSB II’s beneficiary is Youk’s Hits for Kids, and Comcast Sports Network New England is the title sponsor. Over 80 Blogs, including yours truly, Boston Red Thoughts will be there. Interested? You can register at their website. See you on November 6th!

Coming up: A whole TON of “lasts” for the 2010 campaign: The last series, the last homestand, the last time the Sox have to deal with the Skanks, and the last time Daisuke will take the mound (The last 2, I am not super broken up about). He is opposed by Andy Pettitte. Let’s hope the Sox beat up on him like they did last week. 1st pitch 7:10pm….

The least 3 games of the season–enjoy them, cause that is all we get until the end of March 2011…UGH
