    August 31, 2010:
    Heaps and Tons of Randomness…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:18 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

OK, how bout 9 Random things while we wait for the Sox to play their 132nd game tonight, 7 games behind the Skanks in the AL east…

    1. So Manny is going to the White Sox huh? Yippee freaking Skippy. This would not matter to me one iota, expect for the fact that the Sox of the Red variety still have SEVEN games with the Pale Hose, including 3 this weekend at Fenway…So now the press with all be atwitter with “oh! Will Manny get booed now that he is a member of the White Sox?” Puhleese….I just cannot wait until he butts heads with Manager Ozzie Guillen–because you KNOW it’s going to happen–and that will be a good time, because you never know what is going to come out of Ozzie’s mouth…

    2. Red Sox owner John Henry went on record in an e-mail yesterday that he is pleased with the work both Tito (It’s remarkable Tito has juggled 48 players”) and Theo (“and remarkable that Theo was able to provide him with that many replacements capable of keeping us in the hunt.”)has done for the 2010 campaign. The Terry Francona part I agree with 150%–but Theo? Truly, what has he done? Back in June, when the Sox were 1/2 game back, he did nothing. The trade deadline came on July 31, and what did the Sox do? Picked up Jarrod Saltalamacchia–who promptly went on the DL with some sort of bizarre infection in his leg–and got rid of Ramon S… And today, the last waiver day? Do we see any deals? He tried to get Johnny Damon and Mike Napoli–or at least keep them both from Tampa Bay and the Sox–but would either of them actually help the ball club? Oh, and let’s not forget Carlos Delgado, whose hip is worse than Mike Lowell’s, and who has been on the DL pretty much since he signed the minor league contract with the Sox. I dont get it–Theo is usually better than this…

    3. The Rosters expand tomorrow, so rehabbers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Eric Patterson will probably be called up, along with Josh Reddick, who I was disappointed did not stick up in the bigs this year–especially since he has been ON FIRE in the minors, winning the International League Player of the Week award AGAIN–for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. The bullpen will also get some help from Michael Bowden and Dustin Richardson…

    4. Roster expansion is one of the weirdest constructs–On September 1st, the Rosters expand to allow teams to carry up to 40 players. But if they make it to the postseason, the roster shrinks back to 25…While I think it’s good insofar as you give the young ‘uns some big league experience–especially if your team is out of contention. But why September? Wouldn’t April, when everyone isn’t all stretched out yet, be better? Or how bout the Month of July, when everyone is tired and could some reduced playing time? I think the used car salesman needs to convene a focus group or something to work on this…

    5. Revolting Stat Alert: The Sox will pay Josh Becket and John Lackey a combine $30.8 million for their services in 2010. And what did they get for their almost 31$ Million? Glad you asked. 43 starts, 16 wins (and only 5 of them against teams over .500–and none of those 5 wins were by a pitcher not named John Lackey) AND between the 2 of them, they have thrown 264 innings–and given up 303 hits–this includes the 102 Lackey has given up–which is #1 in the AL–glad to know he is #1 in something…UGH…

    6. Holy Buckets!  Theo did something!  He traded Manny Delcarmen to the Rockies for some minor leaguer with a hyphenated name:  Chris Balcom-Miller–who played in single 1 for the 1st year this year, going 6-7 with a 3.11 ERA.  Watch, now MDC will turn into this brilliant pitcher and get the Rockies to the World Series…But at least the Demonic Bullpen Tandem is completely gone–but would have rather they made a deal for Okijima…

    7. Did you hear that Overstock.com is holding an “Ultimate Red Sox Experience” Contest? I came across it last week when I was buying some new stuff for the Boston Red Thoughts Home Office. The winner gets tickets to the Red Sox/Yankees game on Saturday October 2nd. The prize also includes including round trip air-fare, a pre-game VIP tour and, get this, the chance to turn the numbers on the Green Monster scoreboard during one inning! How cool is that??? Of course I entered immediately.

You can enter here–and there is no purchase necessary, but the deadline is September 10th–and you are allowed one entry per day. Good Luck!

    8. Finally, from our friends at eTrueSports, in honor of Manny Ramirez’s return to the Sox–of the paler variety, has this to report: White Sox GM Ken Williams has reportedly turned down new DH Manny Ramirez’s offer to get a haircut in exchange for two years’ free rent for his struggling hair salon, Chez Manny, at U.S. Cellular Field.

“I wanna be next to the Miller Lite Bullpen Sports Bar,” Ramirez apparently told Williams. “All Manny needs is a crewcut, not a salon,” said Williams in a press conference.

After hearing Williams, a subdued Ramirez said, “If I don’t get my dreads done at Chez Manny I may not be able to hustle out ground balls.” You read all about it here

    9. Coming up: Josh Beckett and the Sox are in Baltimore for 3 before heading home for 6…Lets hope Josh Beckett can build on his better outing of last week, where he didn’t turn into Yukky Pitcher until the 7th inning–and the Sox keep Okajima out of the game. And Scott Atchinson… He is opposed by lefty Brian Matusz. 1st pitch 7:05pm…
