    Red Sox 3, Cleveland 1:
    Best game OF THE YEAR…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:56 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox Comments (2)

Holy…Buckets! This one had it all: A Fired up Texan with pitching to match, A Vindicated 3rd/1st baseman, hit batsmen on both sides, and a bench clearing brawl…

And best of all, a much needed win…

Despite the fact that just about every starter for the Boston Red Sox is currently, or has been on the DL this season, last night FELT like a 2004 team, or a 2007 team–and you could almost believe that anything is possible…

Josh Beckett WAS the Ace of the Boston Red Sox last night, pitching 8 brilliant innings of 1 run ball, giving up only 3 hits (including a solo shot to Lou Marson) while walking NONE, and striking out a season high 8–he also hit 2 batters, and threw 103 pitches, 64 for strikes…

Then there was the bench clearing brawl, which started because Cleveland Reliever Jensen Lewis threw behind Adrian’s Beltre’s back (David Huff threw behind Big Papi the inning before) apparently in retaliation for Josh Beckett hitting Shelley Duncan and Shin-Soo Choo. Final result? Lewis and Beckett and Indians third-base coach Steve Smith were ejected from the game…

And fortunately, Jonathan Papelbon did his job last night, and pitched a perfect inning for his 25th save of the season–the 5th time he has done that in his career…and the 1st pitcher in history to do it in each of his 1st 5 years in the bigs…

And what about MIKE LOWELL?? Filling in for the DL’ed Kevin Youkilis, 1st pitch in his 1st bat, 2-RUN HOMER! You KNOW he had to be going “tehehehehehehe” when he was rounding the bases… He also made a brilliant, highlight reel play at 1st, getting the ball and then DIVING to 1st base to get there before the runner…Niiiiiice…..

And here is the measure of what a great person Mike Lowell is: Even after all the crap the Sox have put him through, he still wants to play for the Sox–and has no desire to be traded to the Skanks (who are the only team that wanted him) Classy guy–through and through…SO glad the fans gave him a bunch of standing O’s during the game last night…

I am SO glad they went this route–the original lineup had Victor Martinez at 1st, with Kevin Cash catching, but then the Sox came to their senses and move Martinez back behind the dish, and put Lowell at 1st. If Kevin Youkilis is lost to the season, (and with how the injury sounds–a ruptured adductor muscle in his right thumb–that seems very likely), Mike Lowell needs to be the starting 1st baseman…THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN…

And, it’s looking more and more like we will never get to see the team Theo built in the offseason…

And Stop the Press, Who is That? Jacoby Ellsbury. Yep, he’s back, He’s been activated, and he is ready to play: “I’m willing to play through pain. That’s never been an issue. It’s just knowing that when I do play through it, it’s not going to make my situation worse…I’ll play through any kind of pain, just as long as it doesn’t jeopardize my career and make the situation worse where I’m not helping the team.” Ah huh….Look for him to be in the lineup tonight…unless he breaks a nail, then all bets are off…

Coming up: Jon Lester will hopefully get his mojo back, and shake off his last couple of less than stellar starts in Game 3 of this 4 game series. He is opposed by old friend Justin Masterson., who hasn’t been doing all that well this year (3-10, 5.55), despite beating the Sox soundly the last time he faced them. 1st pitch 7:10pm
