    July 2, 2010:
    Another one bites the dust…

Posted by Christine E. at 11:58 am in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

OK, now this is getting ridiculous…

Last night, I saw that the Sox had brought back Kevin Cash–the backup catcher who took care of Tim Wakefield’s starts during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns, and thought “How cool, they want someone more experienced to backup Jason Varitek–and he can catch Wake…”

Yeah. Sure. Right. Imagine my surprise this morning when I find out that Kevin Cash is REPLACING ‘Tek as starting catcher–because when he fouled the ball off his foot during Wednesday’s game, he sustained an injury similar to Dustin Pedroia’s–and will be out about the same amount of time–4-6 weeks!

Oh, and BTW, Manny Delcarmen is going on the DL with right forearm strain–but any move to break up the demonic bullpen tandem is not a bad thing…So, let’s recap shall we? And I am only listing players who are actually ON the DL, rather than everyone who is limited, or day to day–it’ll be a shorter list…

Actually, maybe if I list everyone who is NOT injured, that would be a shorter list…

Josh Beckett–Should be back by the end of July, if not sooner…

Manny Delcarmen–Until he gets right, let him stay on the DL indefinitely–but he can be activated right after the All-Star Break.

    Jacoby Ellsbury–Who even knows…

    Mike Lowell–See Jacoby Ellsbury

Victor Martinez–Should be activated right after the All-Star Break.

    Dustin Pedroia–Beginning of August-ish.

    Jason Varitek–Middle of August-ish.

    Jeremy Hermida–Probably right after the All-Star Break…

So, that is the staff Ace, a set-up man, the starting and backup catchers, the starting 2nd baseman, a starting outfielder, and 2 bench players–1/3 of the 25 man…freaking wonderful…

Good news on the Josh Beckett front though–he had his simulated game this week, throwing 41 pitches over 2 innings of work–and felt fine. Unless his back falls off between now and then, he will get a real start in a minor league game on Tuesday…

And it looks like That Clay Person is OK, and is still on track to start on Monday, and will throw a side session over the weekend…

Last night at 11:59pm EST, was the deadline for people to vote for the All Star Starters. The results will be part of a special 4th of July Edition of the All-Star Game Selection Show on TBS…

And then, in less than 2 weeks, the All-Star game will be held on July 13th, and will be hosted by The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Paris, France, United States, Montevideo–in Anaheim…

And do I think any of the Sox starters made the cut? Not even a little. Although I hope that Youk will get in under the players ballot, and I would not be surprised is David Ortiz does as well–and maybe MAYBE Adrian Beltre, but since everyone else is INJURED, that will be about it for position players. Do I think Clay Buchholz has a shot? Maybe–But I think David Price will get the start–and since Joe Girardi is the AL Coach this year, I think if there is a Skankee starter, he’ll go instead with them instead of That Clay Person…and we’ll see an all-star lineup STOCKED with Skanks…

Coming up: Can the Sox PLEASE get it together and get Tim Wakefield a win?? He has been the “lack of run support” guy for far too long–and if its not lack of run support, its some bullpen guy screwing the pooch–enough is enough. He needs 15 wins to tie Cy Young and Fatboy Roger for the club record–and he is not getting any younger…Kicking of the 3 games series against Baltimore, and making his record setting 201st start with the Boston Red Sox, Wake is opposed by Brad Bergesen. 1st pitch 7:10pm…
