    Red Sox 5, Giants 1:
Another Day, Another Win, Another Injury…

Posted by Christine E. at 5:32 pm in Baseball,Random Thoughts,Red Sox No Comments

I was out of pocket for several days and I come back to find that, in addition to the 37 other players currently injured or on the DL, everyone else seems to now be injured as well..

Dustin Pedroia has a foot fracture and is out for the foreseeable future, and could even need surgery–I have been hearing everything from “a few weeks” to “5-6 months”….He is being examined by Sox Medical Staff today, so hopefully the picture will be clearer

Mike Lowell is on the DL for hip strain, which coincidentally occurred at the same time the Sox activated Daisuke from the DL–and the fact that he is injured is rather amazing, since they never let him play…

That Clay Person, fresh off his 1st major league hit, hyper-extended his knee/strained his lower hamstring running to 2nd base in the 1st inning of Saturday’s night’s contest, leading to the pretty much the entire bullpen having to pitch to actually complete the game–fortunately, they won….and even more fortunate, there is no structure damage, so it looks like he wont miss a start…

And in yesterday afternoon’s game, Victor Martinez gets hurt, but what he hurt I am not super clear on. At first he was taken out of the game because he got hit on the foot with a foul ball–and then everyone is saying, “no, it’s not the foot, he fractured his thumb” Huh? Victor explains: “The first one hit my finger, and then it hit my toe at the same time. It was sore. Both were sore, but the second one, I had another foul tip off my thumb again. By the time I got back to the dugout, it swelled and swelled and I couldn’t put my hand in the glove. It was really painful.” It will all depend on the swelling as to whether or not he will need a DL stint…

And ALREADY folks are cheering that Jason Varitek will start all the time now–which, despite what some people think, is not a good thing–he has been successful this year BECAUSE he doesn’t play every day. But the problem is that the 2 catchers with Pawtucket are injured–and Mike Lowell is on the DL (at least he would get to play more.). So, if Victor Martinez goes on the DL, the Sox have a heap of trouble on their hands….

But, after the bullpen extravaganza that was Saturday’s night’s game the Sox needed Jon Lester to come up big–and he came up HUGE–a completely game 1 run gem, beating out Giants ace and 2-time defending Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum…

The rest of his line: 103 pitches, 76 for strikes, giving up 5 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 9 for his 9th win of the season…

So, after 18 interleague games, the Sox fared very well, going 13-5 in the span…

And what exactly is this 2 off days in 4 nonsense? The Sox are off today, then 2 home games with Tampa Bay, then ANOTHER off day, then 3 more home games, this time with Baltimore…They couldn’t play a 3rd game with Tampa? They already play them 411 times a season. What’s one more??

Coming up: The 1st of 2 games against Tampa Bay, sandwiched between off-days–weirdness. Hopefully the Sox will do as well as they did the last item they saw them, and can put come more distance between them in the standings. John Lackey goes for his 9th win of the season, opposed by James Shields. 1st pitch: 7:10pm
